While Dr Mahathir can rant that the Jews control the world, your more open-minded conspiracy theorist might reasonably conclude that it's the Muslims who have an inside track with the world's media. Here's a classic example of the lengths the American press go to to avoid offending the sensibilities of its delicate readers. What word does not appear in this  New York Times headline about France's gang-rape epidemic?  " A Crime Of The Young Stalks France's Urban Wastelands. (Link) "  A crime of "the young"? Any "young" in particular? Well, if you burrow down deep in the piece, you'll find the word "Muslim" does appear once, but applied to the female victims not the male perpetrators. I prefer my own take on the subject from early September 2002 in The Face Of The Tiger . One point worth emphasizing is this: comparing my experiences in "les banlieus" and the Middle East, I would say the unassimilated Muslim immigrants of Europe are far more radical, far more violent, far more hostile to the west — a perverse tribute, in its own way, to the illusions of multiculturalism :

Well, if you're going to stretch the case that the Kab'ah is an "idol" then I guess you'd have to accept the Moslem criticism of Christianity as "polytheist." That is, we worship, three gods equally - the Father, the Son, and the Virgin Mary. They really think that.

Of course it's a misinterpretation, and the whole "moon god" thing is equally silly. Of all of the things Islam may be properly accused of (and the list is long) idolatry isn't one. Sunni Islam has gone to the lengths of forbidding the human figure in art to avoid it.

How the Kab'ah came to be a centerpiece of Islamic worship is certainly an interesting and very peculiar story. One might say the same about the Dome of the Rock (supposedly built on the site where Mohammed ascended to heaven on a fiery chariot, although some Muslim scholars dispute that identification, evidently with good cause). These are two very strange anomalies in a religion that formally eschews such things.

Islam has some very, very dark undercurrents, including formal repression of women in a culture where that wasn't always the case (the Arabs used to have queens prior to the 7th century AD) and consecrated assassins. The Thugees predate Hamas by a millennium. Personally I'd prefer to criticize them for the crimes they've committed and not mischaracterize aspects of their religion that don't merit it. We lose credibility by doing so. All IMHO, of course.
