If I were in her position, I would not want to be kept around like a piece of furniture. I especially would not want to be a huge drain of emotional and financial assets to my family.

Check out this thread with facts about Michael Schiavo.

He stands to inherit her medical trust fund when she dies (over $1M) from a malpractice settlement.

He's shacked up with another woman who is now pregnant, probably by him.

Besides refusing access to the parents, he has refused to let a priest administer Catholic last rites to Terry.

While she's in bad shape, Terry Schiavo is not in a coma. She is not a vegetable. This is judicial murder, by a greedy husband trying to get his hands on money which was to have been for his wife's care.

She was given verbal commands and performed appropriately. She hear's her father's voice and responds with the appropriate name-Dad. She's listening to some awful music and once her mother opens her mouth she smiles. Reason magazine should come to the conclusion that Mr. Bailey suffers from PVS. He can only give reflexive responses that indicate an inability to actually comprehend the subject and evaluate the evidence.

The reality is, the brain is so complex, humanity is just beginning to have an inkling about how it works.

Terri has brain activity. There is disagreement among family members and 'experts' on how alert she is.

Absent a living will, and when there is disagreement about the individual's wishes among family members, we should err on the side of life.

There was a time when no one doubted that the world was flat.

There was a time when bleeding someone was considered good medical practice.

There was a time that it was considered OK to whip a slave...because they were believed to be different, not quite human and didn't feel pain.

And lets not forget lobotomies, basic brain scrambling, but considered to be the cutting edge treatment for mental patients at the time.

Or how anyone with a severe physical disability where considered mentally deficient, just because they couldn't express themselves.

So, with our past histories behind us, we know ALL there is to know about brain function and disabilities. We know exactly what is going on inside Terri and folks like here.</heavy snark >

In 10, 20, 50 years, when we learn more about those with brain injuries, I want to be able to live with myself. And not find out that I was like some of the folks listed above.
I want to err on the side of decency and life.

I wish that I had noticed this thread a week or so ago, before I noticed and began to participate in a myriad of other 'Terri topic' threads at this site. The discussion here seems both more objective and more well thought through (by those on both sides of the issue) than I have seen demonstrated in the numerous 'save Terri' threads at this site.

Having said that, I'd like to refer the various posters in this thread to the following link, wherein I posted an invitation to any and all to participate in a private discussion of this topic with me. For complex reasons briefly explained in that post, I am longer participating in the open discussions of this 'Terri topic' at this site.

[As just a side note: So far I have had no takers on the invitation to a private discussion of the topic.)
