I hardly belong in the Du website, but you guys are hypocrites on this issue.

I'll expound:

1) You would scream about the ACLU and liberals using the courts to legislate when they cannot win in the legislature, but it is okay to use the Florida legislature to overturn things when you lose in court?

2)You would scream for the death penalty for a convicted murderer(as I would too) but a man cannot grant his wifes final wish of dying with a little dignity.

3)Just because the legislature of Florida is republican controlled does not mean they are above question or immune from a contrary opinion.

4)Any sarcastic commentary from me has been in DIRECT RESPONSE to nastiness spewed in my direction from supposedly "good christian folks" and fellow republicans. Which points out the very division in our party that seeks to hold it back, the deeply religious wing and the more secular wing.

And my personal favorite:"SO, YOU JUST SHUT-UP ABOUT MY GOVERNOR AND MY LEGISLATURE! YOU ARE WAY TOO LIBERAL AND ANTI-REPUBLICAN TO BE ALLOWED ON THIS SITE!"

I think if you look in my posting history, you will find absolutely nothing to back up this absurd claim other than the fact that I am pointing out the hypocrisy of the "make Terri Live" crowd on this one subject. when you post drivel like this remember one thing: Don't let your mind wander, it is way to small to be out by itself.

She is only not dying because someone else is keeping her alive with a tube. Give her a ham sandwich and see if she can eat it alone without help, then I'll buy into the "Terri is alive and vibrant, and wants to go shopping" thing.

But in this case, he has won in court and now he has to go back again to press for his rights as her legal guardian.

Basically you are saying that all my patients on tube feedings should die. Oh! lets not forget the ones who need to be hand fed, or have adaptive equipment so the utensil will make it to their mouth. Or the ones who need the texture of their food changed so they can swallow it....or their liquids thickened so they don't choke....

Or the ones who need small bits of finger foods handed to them every time they walk by because they no longer can sit to eat.....or or...

Geez...There goes just about everyone in long term care.

It is apparent that Terri has sufficient swallowing ability to handle her own secretions, therefore it would be my recommendation that she receive a modified barium swallow study to assess swallow function for intake trials of thin and thick liquids and pureed consistencies. It has been my experience that patients similar to Terri have been able to accomplish food intake. This would permit Terri greater interaction with her family and in social situations through the enjoyment of mealtimes. I have worked with numerous disabled patients who have expressed to me that being able to eat would make the difference between their desiring to live or die."
