The question is why does your morality (or anyone elses)override his legal rights? One reason: There is great suspicion (backed by the comments made by Dr. Michael Baden on Greta van Sustern's show last night) that Michael may have tried to kill Terri. He should not be allowed to put her to death, and especially not be allowed to have her cremated immediately after death as he has already gotten permission to do, without a thorough investigation.
...when for the last 13 years nobody gave a fat-rats patootie about her.
Better late than never.
To: Gringo1
And she hasn't been a wife for 13 years either. That's a real stretch, comparing the inability of her to be a wife to the refusal of Michael to be a husband.
To: BlessedBeGod
It has nothing to do with compassion. I think the other side of this argument has been replacing compassion for activism. Where were you for the last 13 years?
thats right....nobody cared until it became a death issue.
I'm amazed at your powers of mind-reading. The whole god-squad seems to be able to tell that this woman wants to live, that Gringo1 is a minion of satan, and that they all know what God wants.
Amazing! Y'all know any card tricks too?

It's not often that my mind is ever changed, but this is such a case. I've read a great deal about Dr. Baden, and his ground-breaking forensic work over the years. This isn't a man who'd point fingers willy-nilly, nor does he seem prone to political bias.

I found this on the Doctor:
"Dr. William Hammesfahr, a world-renowned expert in cases such as Terri's and a Nobel Prize nominee testified that Terri is not in a PVS. He also testified that he believes he could help her improve her circumstances through proper medical treatment. Ten other physicians have testified or given statements that Terri is not unconscious. Judge Greer instead chose to believe contrary testimony by a doctor who rarely sees Terri and another doctor, who makes an avocation of testifying in cases such as Terri's throughout the country, always on the side of dehydration"

I agree, they can't deal with it so they think it is better to put the person out "their misery" so they won't have to think about it anymore. They think Terri is weak minded but she puts them to shame

Yeah, there are a couple of threads up about him and a couple of the other doctors that say that Terri is not vegetative. I pinged you to at least one of them I'm sure.

Where were you for the last 13 years? I didn't hear about the case until it was posted on FR. I live in Illinois, not Florida, and it wasn't reported here that I'm aware of.
I'm amazed at your powers of mind-reading.
And I'm amazed at how you want to let Michael have his way with her, even though there are incredibly suspicious cirmcumstances surrounding the whole thing. You must have great powers of mind-reading yourself if you believe Michael's looking out for her best interests.
The whole god-squad seems to be able to tell that this woman wants to live, that Gringo1 is a minion of satan, and that they all know what God wants.
Is that your problem with this? That a lot of the posters behind Terri are religious? Are you a bigot?
BTW, how do you know that God DOESN'T want this? Or can you read his mind, too? ;-)
To: Gringo1
You have shown no respect to anyone on this thread. We care a great deal about what is happening to this woman. You may not agree with our position, but we do not deserve to be treated with your contempt and callousness.

Look,
I see it all the time. Family members come to visit their loved one. There are the angels who lavish love and care on the person, no matter what state they are in. (Like I said, caring for these folks is the true teller of who YOU are.)
And there is the one who stands back in the corner with this pinched, angry look on their face, as if they are wanting to be anywhere else in the world.
No, not out of grief or hurt, but because they are so terribly offended. Something very primal and ugly is taking place in their minds. Sorta like animals who tear apart the injured or weak of the pack.

Sir, you know not what you speak. While perhaps Terri Schiavo was not the person whose face and whose story was on the forefront, I have for many years supported the rights of ALL disabled persons.
If my morality is that which supports an individual's right to live and not be starved/dehydrated to death then sir, I am all for pushing it down the throats of others. Because the Constitution of this great country ensures us all of that right, be thankful that there is a people who are willing to fight to keep it. The person we save may very well be you. The sad thing is that people have to be told that this is barbaric and inhumane.
Terri Schiavo is not her husband's property to do with what he chooses. Just as you and I are not the property of others, neither is she. You say that he has the legal authority to starve his wife? I say that is questionable under the circumstances.
You complain about "us" taking this case to the legislature. That is the way laws are made. Those in the legislature even argued that the old law was flawed and that the judge misinterpreted the law. Who better to know the intent of the old law than the ones who wrote it and passed it? Did you even listen to the arguments of the legislators? You certainly can now by accessing the archives.
I am no constitutional scholar but I am smart enough to realize that judicial activism and corruption is destroying our inalienable rights.

Any more than knee-jerk legislative activism?

When my mother was dianosed as being in the last stage of terminal cancer a hospice representive talked to me and said that they could help because my mother would die soon and that they cared for people that had only six months left.

I sure would like to know the how these two monsters were able to stick terri in that hellhole without TV, (michael demands that-terri has to live in hell donchaknow, -NO STIMULATION, no socialzation (wheelchairing down to be with others, to join sing alongs, etc)-his orders) Which brings up another question. It is common practice in LTC to stimulate everyone, including those in PVS with TV, decorated rooms, plants, massages whatever. The attitude being, better to err on the side of doin' the right thing than letting them just sit there.
So, if Terri IS totally out of it, why isolate her? What difference would it make?

If you want to see callousness and contempt, read Lion in Winters posts to me, or the hitler-lover post. Nice posts all from compassionate people who also care about Terri.
