ATHENS, Oct 24 (Reuters) - France on Friday reiterated it would not send troops to Iraq to help relieve stretched U.S.-led forces facing a drawn-out guerrilla campaign.
"We are a part of the humanitarian effort but there is no question of sending troops," French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie told Reuters after a meeting with her Greek counterpart Yiannos Papandoniou.
The United States succeeded earlier this month in getting the U.N. Security Council to adopt a resolution to set up a U.S.-led multinational force and persuade other countries to send troops and money to Iraq.
But many countries are reluctant to send troops. France, Russia and Germany, which opposed the U.S.-led war, said the resolution should have done more to expand the United Nations' political role and speed up the transfer of power to Iraqis.
"We accepted the new U.N. resolution to make things progress but we feel that the resolution does not constitute enough of a step forward to fundamentally change the actual situation," Alliot-Marie said during her one-day trip to Athens.
On Thursday Belgium also ruled out sending troops to Iraq, where guerrilla attacks have killed 108 U.S. soldiers since May 1, when U.S. President George W. Bush said major combat in the war to topple Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was over.
France also declined to promise any new financial aid for Iraq at a donors' conference held on Friday in Madrid, where a Reuters calculation showed about $37.5 billion had been pledged by governments and international agencies.
French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin said on Wednesday that France would not fund aid beyond its share of the European Union's commitment until the question of Iraq's sovereignty had been resolved.

As long as we are not planning on surrendering anytime soon, what good is it to even have the French troops?

We gave France back to the French. If they have a problem with sovereignty, they should take it up with Germany, not us.
