Thirty-one years after the Watergate scandal first captivated the American public, an audience packed an auditorium at St. Mary's College of Maryland Friday night and listened with rapt attention as Bob Woodward and Ben Bradlee of The Washington Post recalled what it felt like to be at the center of one of the nation's most important news stories....
Audience members asked a wide range of questions during the talk, probing Woodward and Bradlee for comments on the coverage of the Iraq war and the recent leak of the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame. And it wasn't long before the inevitable question popped up:
"Given how historically important Watergate is, why won't you disclose the name of the informant known as 'Deep Throat'?" one woman asked.
But the famous source, who provided Woodward and Bernstein with valuable background information during their Watergate reporting, was not to be revealed this night.
"Deep Throat is a source who lied to his family, to his friends and colleagues denying that he had helped us. In a sense his identity is embedded in not being a source," Woodward said. "Once he dies, it will be disclosed, and the full story will be told."

"Once he dies, it will be disclosed, and the full story will be told."Translation: There was no Deep throat and we're just going to pin it on a dead guy that can't defend himself. Perhaps?

Yeah, I gotta say, looking at it all, I think the odds are slim that Deep Throat was made up.

Pretty big story to just make up and happen to be correct about, no?Well, let's see. If Deep Throat was about 40 in 1972, then he's about 71 now. So they can claim the guy is still alive for another 35 years. Doomsday will happen before they have to come clean. lol
I don't know, everyone else cashed in, wrote books, got radio shows, and had movies made about them, etc. I find it hard to believe that Deep Throat wouldn't have. If he exists maybe he considers himself a traitor. Otherwise what's the point of keeping quiet? Nixon died a few years ago after all. And I'd think if there was a Deep Throat that he'd be easy to pinpoint. Who's the one that hasn't said anything?
I bet I could make claims against Clinton ragarding Ron Brown and Vince Foster and claim a Deep Throat told me and be pretty accurate.

I anticipate that he is older - in 1972 he was 49.

The Clinton administrations had the REAL Deep Throat, Monica!
They had REAL scandals, corruption, lies, cowardness, mysterious deaths, Chinese money, Missile technology released to the Chinese, etc, etc, etc, etc........
For eight years, Clinton -- a white trash president stumbled through and stuffed his pockets and his crotch ----- and his legacy is that giant hole in Manhatten and all the lives that have been lost to terrorism, which he was too cowardly to address...
Yet THOSE bastards remain the darlings of the radical leftist media....
A pox on all their worthless asses..

"Al Haig..." Could be true. The authors of Silent Coup make quite a good case for that.
Beginning, of course, with the fact that while Woodward was in the Navy, he was one of Haig's briefing officers. The relationship could have started there.
Silent Coup; The Removal Of A President, by Len Colodny and Robert Gettlin, is a book which is a must-read by FReepers interested in Watergate.

Exactly. Watergate was just a couple guys picking a lock looking for papers on the Bay of Pigs invasion or something. Doesn't hold a candle to the traitorous actions of Clinton.

Who's the one that hasn't said anything?Just a suggestion. Gordon Strachan, Haldeman's righthand man, was the only one in the White House who knew about the precise timing of the Watergate burglary in advance and who subsequently destroyed numerous documents germane to the investigation. He did not testify before the Grand Jury, and although the facts are murky, he may have testified before Sirica, in camera. Strachan had greater prior knowledge of the burglary than any of his superiors (he was Liddy's immediate 'contact' in the White House) and he was only one of the conspirators who was indicted for perjury but never served a day in prison.

Yeah could be. I'd say if he existed then it was someone in Hoover's FBI. Hoover died a few weeks before and Nixon wanted to change the FBI and install his own director from outside the department to the chagrin of those that thought they had a chance to be the next director from inside the FBI. Woodward was also getting inside information about other FBI investigations at the time and the source for the Wallace assassination and the DC police corruption investigation that Woodward was already reporting on with a good FBI source would've been involved in the Watergate break-in. It may explain the anonymity or the source also. I would expect an FBI agent to stay anonymous moreso than a Nixon political staffer. He would consider it his duty.
