"Radio" Starring Ed Harris (Boycott Alert!)
PABAAH: Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood ^

Posted on 10/23/2003 12:29:08 PM PDT by jonalvy44

Of our president, Ed Harris had this to say:

"I haven’t even been drinking, but, at all, but, you know, being a man, I’ve got to say that we’ve got this guy in the White House who thinks he is a man, you know, who projects himself as a man because he has a certain masculinity, and he's a good old boy, and he used to drink, and he knows how to shoot a gun and how to drive a pickup truck, etcetera like that. That’s not the definition of a man, God Dammit!" --Ed Harris

Ed Harris is a massive tool.

And he's not a "man". He just plays one on TV.

I believe that is how the old stuff is archived now. IIRC, things didn't actually look like that in the old days, did they?

From which post are you quoting the word "unpatriotic"? I can't find it anywhere above yours.

Don't fret that you can't find it; the blame is not yours. Perhaps I should not have put the word in quotes and I would not have had I known it would cause confusion and distress. For, I was not quoting anyone per se, I was employing the quotes as (what is often termed on the web) scare-quotes.

Were the scare-quotes appropriate? Well, if the organization PABAAH: Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood is not recommending boycott of Harris's movie because they consider him/his quote unpatriotic, but simply because they don't like his comments or for some other reason, then obviously my comments re:unpatriotic don't apply. In other words: My comments about Harris's statement not being unpatriotic were only directed to any hypothetical people (if any such people exist) who may have the misimpression that the quote was unpatriotic and who may thus on those erroneous grounds deem a boycott of his movie "patriotic" (which it is not).

Lest further miscommunication occur due to the quotation marks I have just used in the preceding sentence, I want to make it clear that I do not question the patriotism as such of the members of PABAAH (whom I may fairly and accurately quote as having used the word "Patriotic" in reference to themselves, if nothing else). What I question is the inherent patriotism of the act (of boycotting Radio). But again, if PABAAH does not mean to imply that they consider the act patriotic, but rather that they are patriotic Americans who want to engage in this spurious (and not especially patriotic) act, then I actually have no quarrel with them. I don't know if this all is the case, however, hence my post. Best,

You people might as well stop watching movies, television, and listening to music altogether. 95 percent of these people feel the same. I just ignore their idiotic comments. Although I will make a special exception in the case of Michael Moore.

A man who wears more than one ring on his hand is de facto suspect. The beret is also a cutesy touch. At least he doesn't circle his i's.

You're aware that that's a photo of Harris as "Krystof" (or something like that), a character he played in the movie The Truman Show, right?

I agree, "Krystof" was de facto suspect.

Be serious folks...All this talk about boycotting this movie and that movie, do you honestly think that it will make one bit of difference in the box office reciepts? Lets be real, no one in Hollyweed is worried because of the "list" we have here.

This was so sad when I heard this because I've always loved Ed Harris as an actor. I had no idea he was this much of a bleeding-heart panzy.

I've been boycotting this jerk and his wife and Nick Nolte who were all sitting together at the Oscars a few years ago, when Elia Kazan received his special Oscar.

These fools sat there while most others were standing, sat there with big scowls on their faces, and their hands tucked under their arms. Big protest from them. They showed themselves to be the idiots they are that night.

I believe your second posit is correct. How can one justify the villification of one President, but claim liberals are "unpatriotic" when offering their criticisms of another?

My nine year old thinks this looks like a good movie, and I think that Cuba Gooding Jr. is a hottie!

Your points are well taken. I guess my distinction with the Clinton era bashing is that it occurred over a beer, in the office etc. and did not take place from the podium or the stage. I would love to have heard Springsteen do a scathing number on sexual harassment et al but Hollywwod was mute on all the weaknesses of Bill. I admit to a certain amount of resentment to have my "man" and thus me insulted, but I can handle myself pretty well with those I can actually have a dialogue with. To be preached at from Mount Hollywood, with no way to effect the dialogue but with a boycott and my dollars, that is all I relaly have in what would otherwisebe an unfair onesided conversation.

Later!

Well I'm in complete control of my $8 x 2 people= $16.00 that that anti-American ain't getting...How's that for making a difference? Multiply that by our 775 members plus however many FREEPERS follow suit and that can add up. The wallet speaks real loudly.

Hey, I hope you're right that nobody pushing or attracted to the idea of boycotting Radio does so because they have the impression that his statement was unpatriotic.

That would be terrific, because that was the only point I was trying to get across.

I agree that it sounds like a good story, but I love my country and my president much more than I love any movie. I stand by my principles. You are free to do as you choose, of course.
