WASHINGTON (CNN) - U.S. officials are sweeping Wal-Mart stores across the country in a bid to arrest about 300 illegal workers, law enforcement officials said Thursday.
The arrests came as part of investigation into subcontractors that provide cleaning crews for Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer. Many of those arrested were eastern European nationals who were coming off night cleaning shifts at various Wal-Mart locations, the officials said.

Not nonsense at all. If you're not going to build some level of verification into it then it's just a silly empty clause wasting space and lawyer fees. Any requirement you put in a contract for the other guy needs to be verifiable by you or an agreed upon arbitrator, otherwise it serves no purpose. If you want to fill your contracts with pointless filler be my guest, I prefer for every word to have both use and meaning.

No. It sounds like a remarkably LOW rate, if that's all there is.

I was speaking of Wal-Mart and its contractors; you're shifting the argument to a national paradigm.

Well, I know something of what happens when Wal-Mart hires someone. Without nicely forged documents, no illegal alien is going to get a job at Wal-mart--all that stuff gets looked at, checked, and kept on file. A member of management might cheat for awhile, but they have to send copies of documents higher up, so they'd have to be (effectively) forging documents themselves to hire someone illegal and keep them hired. A contractor can sure do it, but Wal mart itself? No. I just don't think they have a systemic problem with that. ANYONE can get fooled by forged documents.

Even though illegal aliens have been found working on our warships, inside of our naval bases, and have been found working in nuclear submarine pens and President Bush was photographed with an illegal alien that helped put up the White House Christmas tree, of course Wal-Mart, of all companies is leading this Home Land security charge...Tom Ridge should be proud...

We have a store & warehouse in our area, both near 50% hispanic in the last 10 years. Sure be nice to know HOW wal-mart VERIFIES all those mexican HS diploma's.
Ya know, wal-mart won't hire any American kids unless they have graduated.

Me either, in fact I'll probably shop at Wal'mart more than ever.
It's quite obvious that their enemies are our enemies.

I suppose if Wal-Mart is doing large-scale hiring of illegals then it's a decision that has been made at the top, and they're gonna get it by and by.

What I don't get is how it happens that these workers were mostly "Eastern European nationals" (code term for "white"). In a nationwide investigation of janitorial contractor employees, what are the chances of this particular group forming the largest component of the illegals found? It has been my personal experience that here in my state (Georgia) it is indeed true that most of the workers for these floor cleaning contractors are young Eastern Europeans. I used to work for a large grocery store chain until recently, and all three floor cleaning contractors we used sent us predominately workers from the Czech Republic.
I'm with you though. It is rather interesting that the Feds would go after one of the very few industries that hire a preponderance of white illigals.
To: HiJinx
This investigation reportedly started in 1998. There's something else that doesn't pass the smell test. Trying to get the feds to investigate and prosecute politically powerful people and organizations is not easy.
