Forest Service officials are pressing Nevada's Shovel Brigade to retract radio ads they say are inflammatory and promote ill will toward agency officials by describing them as armed and dangerous.

But leaders of the citizen activist group challenging federal jurisdiction over a rugged canyon road bordering threatened trout habitat say the ads are truthful.

There's a simple solution to this: Forest Service employees should stop carrying firearms, and then they would be neither armed nor dangerous.

Grant Gerber, an Elko lawyer who has represented the Shovel Brigade in past legal actions, confirmed he talked to Dallas about the ad and told him he considered it truthful.

It's only truthful if those who are cited by USFS rangers are in danger of being shot by them.

My understanding is that the USFS personnel one would be likely to encounter in situations like this are not armed. If I'm correct, then this fellow's characterization is "truthful" in (at best) the whackjob "all government is bad and rules at the point of a gun" sense of the term.

Alas, this statement is probably counterproductive.

Only the threat of leathal force would encourage someone to do anything other than ignore them.

Not really. The USFS person could merely note the license plate number and turn it all over to the lawyers.

Or, if the person persists in ignoring the laws, and the duly constituted authority of the ranger, the USFS person would be perfectly justified in calling the cops to take a hand in the matter.

This "armed and dangerous" crap sounds like something Rick Stanley would pull out. Most folks don't believe it -- primarily because it's obviously not true. So it makes the Shovel Brigade look looney.

Not True? You obviously have not viewed the movie "Jay and Silent Bob."

I've never heard of the movie "Jay and Silent Bob," nor do I consider movies to be a valid and reliable source for factual information.

I have, however, seen plenty of USFS people in my life, and I honestly cannot recall ever seeing one carrying a gun.

It was Gloria Flora, then the local FS supervisor, who made the accusations that the locals, including Helen Chenowith and other elected officials, were threatening towards the FS employess.

After her resignation, her replacement repudiated her statements. Gloria now works for an Enviro groups and still continues to badmouth the locals.

The FS really needs to take a look at her and her cronies that are still on the scene.

Now thats stupid. First of all the only ones that carry firearms are law enforcement officers, ie policeman. They have a very dangerous job these days, I work for the agency and respect these guys very much

"It is this kind of public rhetoric that can promote ill will toward our employees and tears down any efforts we continually work on to establish positive community relationships."

What efforts? There weren't "any."

As if citing a 4-wheeler for dust was going to build good will.

Out of the hundreds of employees of a national forest, probably only one of them is an LEO and carries a firearm.

There are a couple of issues in this article. Sometimes the forest service closes roads maybe they shouldn't, I know cause I work for them. This part of the country has a history of conflict betwenn the feds and private property rights groups. Sounds to me like communiction is the key, apparently no one is talking to each other
