A lot of people have been searching for this individual so I thought that posting this could bring up some clues. I think it is a long shot but I informed the relative that I would try my best

Sometime in 1985, Tom mysteriously disappeared and has not been seen since.

At the time of his disappearance, he was residing in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Statistics on Tom:

Date of Birth: May 13, 1936

Place of Birth: Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii

Japanese-American male

Current Age: 67 years old

Height: approximately 5 feet 8 inches

Weight: approx. 175 - 190 lbs. (in 1985)

Hair: gray/white

Eyes: brown

IF YOU KNOW Tom, you would know a highly intelligent, gregarious and outgoing man, with many friends and many talents. A true Renaissance man Tom speaks with an aristocratic accent and is well versed in German and Latin.

For a time, Tom was the reverend and chaplain at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy on the Big Island of Hawaii. He was and continues to be well known throughout the Big Island as "Father Tom". While in Hawaii, he was loved and respected, touching those around him with his special gifts of compassion and understanding. A sculpture dedicated to his memory can be seen at the HPA Chapel.

Tom likes to cook and photograph, take hikes and study plant life, is a voracious reader and enjoys fine music and art. Tom’s photographic talents were seen in several exhibits throughout the country in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Tom is a master chef, who can whip up authentic Japanese food as well as the most delicate French cuisine. Tom also had a green thumb.

If you have seen Tom (anytime in the present or past), know of his whereabouts, or know what may have happened to him, please send an email -

His neice sent me an email and she told me that she started looking for him around 1998 and did a pretty intensive search for 2 years, using a private investigator and having many searches done in various databases, social security DB included.

She is not sure what has become of him, and after talking to the last person who saw him back in 1985, there is absolutely no trace of him, no paper trail, nothing.

She even found the VIN number of the car he had been driving at the time and that didn't lead anywhere. She did meet many of his friends and former students along the way. She also talked to Donn Carlsmith, a prominent attorney and businessman in Hawaii, who recently passed away, about Father Tom. He also tried to search for him in the late 1980's, with no luck. She said that he was last in Walnut Creek /Ross area (Northern California).

The day he left, he told his friend (Karen Perkins) that he was going back east to see friends and would leave her his contact information. When she got back home from work, he was gone and he had not left any information. He had been in the SF area for a year or so by that time, kind of searching for the next thing to do. He did try to open a photo studio in the city but it never got off the ground. Some say he was fleeing Hawaii, others say he just wanted to live on the mainland for a change.

I was at Alumni Weekend in '98, '99 and 2000, and I remember finding out about that website one of those years. Probably '99.

Did you go to HPA?
