I think that one think that would start a massive shooting war would be the appearance of "blue helmets" enmass on our soil. Another might be the sudden elimination (or attempt) of the 2nd amendment. Either one could cause the military to attempt a coup

Either one could cause the military to attempt a coup For better or worse, I wouldn't be surprised if the "Second Amendment Issue" isn't brought to a head within the next 25-50 years.
That "head" will be a conclusive case/decision before the United States Supreme Court, which will rule one way -- or the other -- that _individuals_ do (or do not) have an explicit right to keep and bear arms.
If the RKBA _loses_, look for national legislation in the order of a "Gun Recovery Act" (out of "The Turner Diaries"). Would this provoke real shooting, or just a collective sigh as gun owners are forced to give up their weapons?
Just a thought...

The time is ripe for foreign intervention in the U.S. Our troops are spread out all over the world. Suppose we had a civil insurrection here and they called in the U.N. troops. France won't help us in Iraq but I'm sure they'd be happy to occupy New York city of Washington. Of course there's the problem then of American gunowners who would hesitate to shoot at U.S. troops but probably would think it was open season on Blue Helmets. They are used to a docile, dis-armed populace and I think they'd be in for a major suprise.
