The Egyptian Navy plans to accept the delivery of the first Phalanx Block 1B Close-In Weapon system in 2005 from Raytheon. Deliveries will end by 2007.
Raytheon has been awarded a $31.2 million contract to produce four Phalanx Block 1B systems for Egypt. The systems will be produced at Raytheon Missile System in Louisville, Ky.
Executives said the first system will arrive in April 2005. The remaining systems will be delivered over a six-month period.

Phalanx is a 'close-in' weapon system - a gatling gun mated with a radar. It is basically a last-ditch self defense for a ship under Exocet/Harpoon or air attack. Not a hostile system at all, and in my experience, not all that great for what it was designed for. If this baby lights off on an incoming missle, you better hope to hell it hits it, because it is supposed to destroy the incoming at 2000 or so yards - about a mile. A missile flies a mile pretty quick.

Why would we want to arm Egypt? Could they lob those missles into Israel????US Navy Phalanx Close-In Weapons System

Its not a missile system. Its more like an anti-missile system, but its really more like a gatling gun with smart electronics.

they'll be shooting em at us in 10 yrs Doubt it. More like, they will be begging us to sell them spare parts in 2 years.
Remember during the Cold War, when Egypt was siding with the Soviet Union. In one diplomatic visit by Egyptian cabinet ministers, they were constantly asking for spare parts from the Soviets.

Yeah, but when it does hit an incoming missile, there's not much left of it. But you are correct...it's the last line of defense. Either way...I WANT ONE!

These things are awesome. I was on LSD-42 (Germantown) when the Navy would do both dry and drone/test fire..These puppies rockthe whole damn ship!! And the movement's of the mechanism as a whole are creepy...deadly accurate.
To: yonif
Sheer insanity. While we are at it, we need to proscribe Pakistan as a recipient of our arms as well.

As I recall these things were a maintenance headache for USN technicians to maintain, at least on the ships I was on. They were down for repairs quite often - this will probably sell a lot of spare parts.

wonder if any navy-nerds have reprogrammed it to single-shot fire at seagulls. ;)

Good.
As long as they have a remote control "Off" switch.

this will probably sell a lot of spare parts. It is our money either way. Who do they presume the weapons against ?
I already know.
To: yonif
that's alright ... a Phalanx is useless against a torpedo fired from a Dolphin-class submarine ...
