Although "letting [Republicans] know you will support them through thick and thin even though you don't agree with them 100%" may "give pubs some spine" (and I'm not convinced that's even true), how does this not encourage greater unaccountability? The only accountability any of us has is in the election booth. My suggestion that picking the best man and then supporting him while he is in office is not mutually exclusive to accountability. If he doesn't measure up or better candidate comes along, vote him out next time around.
This fixation you seem to have with accountability or the lack thereof, is quite perplexing. You claim it is not there yet it is excercised every time you enter the voting booth. Do you not vote? Is that it? I guess if one doesn't vote then yes, one would have issues with accountability. However, projecting your paranoia onto others that, as opposed to you, excercise due diligence in their citizenship, is not only unproductive, it may be harmful to your mental well being.

Do you think that the media and their coverage have no effect? I guess you think everyone reads the Congressional Record and ignores TV.There is the key Miss Marple! One of the biggest hurdles for us to overcome, the media. There are those who just don't realize that so many people get all of their views strictly from Dan, Katie, Jennings, et al.

Jim ,
Allow me to play devil's advocate .
1.)What constitutional rights do you believe the ACLU is trashing?
2.) What piece of legislation, which was promulgated by the Clinton administration, and passed by Congress, do you believe trashed the Constitution?

Your giving crecednce that hte courts have more power... Those that interpret the law make law. So, yes the federal judiciary is now the most powerful branch of the troika. That very fact is the lesson the liberals have learned and that is how the tyranny of the minority has come to be. The 14th amendment effectively killed the 10th amendment and is the single greatest reason for the big government we have today.

Democrat voters, for the most part do not even have a clue as to what is is their party's platform. They vote because someone told them that democrats represent the working man and the poor. They could care less and will never know or understand that they elected a socialist or a commie.Spot on!

I think that perhaps a larger picture that we all seem to be missing on the issue of accountability, is the fact that once elected, we need to hold candidates accountable for those promises actually made during the campaign, and not accountable for our expectations, specially if those expectations were never part of the candidates platform to start with.
For example: way too often I see the old "I won't vote for Bush because..." followed by a screed about someone's pet issue, and how the President has somehow failed to address it to this person's satisfaction, yet, this may be an issue that Bush had never prmised action on during his candidacy, nor can you find it in the GOP platform.
One needs to actually listen to the things candidates promise to do, note the things they don't make any promises on, and judge their performance based on that.
