Many (but nowhere near all) practicing Catholics you know are far, far removed from Pope HQ, and practice their religion on their own terms, with reverence and progressive thought and inner fortitude, and love and latex and laughter and healthy doses of irony and perspective.

I imagine this was thrown in to appease the half dozen or so people in San Francisco who still admit to being Roman Catholic.

Catolicism is what the Pope and the Vatican say it is. If you are "practicing religion on your own terms" you are no longer a Catholic.
