God urging me on, says 'gay' bishop - (Filed: 20/10/2003)

The Episcopal Church's first openly gay bishop-elect said yesterday that he is agonising over the turmoil his election is causing but believes God wants him to go forward.

"This is one of the hardest things I'll ever do," said the Rev Gene Robinson at Grace Church, Manchester, New Hampshire. "I do have this sense I'm supposed to go forward, and I do feel that's coming from God and not my own ego."

Rev Gene Robinson Rev Robinson was elected by clergy and parishioners in New Hampshire in June and confirmed by the national Episcopal Church in August. He is scheduled to be consecrated as bishop of New Hampshire in two weeks. His election and confirmation has outraged some conservatives and is threatening to divide the Episcopal Church in the United States and the worldwide Anglican Communion, of which it is part.

At an emergency meeting at Lambeth Palace, in London, last week Anglican leaders warned that if Rev Robinson was consecrated as planned on Nov 2, "the future of the communion itself will be put in jeopardy".

Rev Robinson, 56, who was accompanied by a police officer yesterday, remains optimistic about the Church's future, saying it has weathered similar crises in the past.

Anglican leaders, representing 77 million members worldwide, say homosexuality is "contrary to Scripture". Mr Robinson says that is outweighed by the Scripture's call for love and acceptance of all.

He should try a tin foil hat to calm the voices. If the hat doesn't work then he should see and exorcist. What he is hearing isn't God.

there is something he worships pushing him forward but it is not god. (perhaps it is his god)

How does the quote go, the greatest danger is from those who would protect us.

Arrogance, If he realy meant anything he would be open to allowing individual parishes to break out WITH the churches.

Of course, the Anglicans did that 500 years ago (throw away 1,500 years of Church history) when the issue was divorce.

Dude's got butt pirating on the brain. It's bad enough that he is openly living in sin with his boy toy, but he left his family and kids for butt sex. Even in the Episcopal Church, which is a the nirvana of theological pluralism, a straight man or woman in the clery would not be entitled to such high an office (not even parish ministry) for abandoning his marriage and family. Obvious radical homosexual political agenda at work, nothing resembling scripture, reason, tradition is being weighed. Butt sex is not a Civil Right! I am tired of the gay agenda.

The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by their wickedness.
19
For what can be known about God is evident to them, because God made it evident to them.
20
Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made. As a result, they have no excuse;
21
for although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened.
22
While claiming to be wise, they became fools
23
and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for the likeness of an image of mortal man or of birds or of four-legged animals or of snakes.
24
Therefore, God handed them over to impurity through the lusts of their hearts 15 for the mutual degradation of their bodies.
25
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
26
Therefore, God handed them over to degrading passions. Their females exchanged natural relations for unnatural,
27
and the males likewise gave up natural relations with females and burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity.
28
And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God handed them over to their undiscerning mind to do what is improper.
29
They are filled with every form of wickedness, evil, greed, and malice; full of envy, murder, rivalry, treachery, and spite. They are gossips
30
and scandalmongers and they hate God. They are insolent, haughty, boastful, ingenious in their wickedness, and rebellious toward their parents.
31
They are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
32
Although they know the just decree of God that all who practice such things deserve death, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

It's not fair that you say everything twice.
It's not fair that you say everything twice.

The King did it in an era when kings really ruled.

Hard to blame that on English Christianity.

Hmm. I'd be awfully suspicious about a sudden change in God's attitude toward homosexuality. Seems to violate the never changing part.

It wasn't a sudden change. From what I have observed in many of today's Christian denominations, "God" first changed his mind on divorce, lust, fornication, cohabitation, adultery, and so forth. Homosexuality was merely the next item on the list.

That might be the Anglican's core problem, placing a royal figure as the titular head of their Charch.

Early churches actually feared the prinint press. People would read the bible and find out what was or was not allowed. In those days priests would engage in all forms of immorality. (hey baby its a sacrament, really) I guess some priests have not changed.

BTW: The Orthodox church which also traces its lines back to the original Disciples, has always allowed three efforts at marriage. (Don't forget the churches split in around 1051)

The layman way to look at it: The first time, you were too young. The second time, rebound. Third time, better get it right.

Its actually kind of ironic with regards to the Anglican church. There was a thread here on FR that identified the Orthodox church as having deep roots in the knights in England.

Amen--and how easy it is to hear Satan and think it sounds divine (because that's what we want to hear!) I wonder if this is the same voice of God that told him to leave his family to cleave to another man?

Interetsing. Thanks for the post. A quick search indicates (at least among Greek Orthodox): "No person may marry more than three times in the Church, with permission for the third marriage granted only with extreme oikonomia."

I would be surprised if the Anglicans allow for any sort of limitation.
