Supporters of a new law granting drivers licenses to illegal immigrants said Saturday they will stage work stoppages and other actions as part of a counteroffensive against a Republican effort to overturn the measure.

About 150 members of Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana, a Santa Ana-based immigrants advocacy group, were joined by Democratic officials at the group's national conference to devise strategies to protect the controversial law.

The organization, which must collect 375,000 voter signatures by Dec. 7, says it has gathered nearly 40,000 so far.

There's only 6 or 7 weeks left till Dec 7th, I hope they can get the necessary number of signatures to get it on the ballot. Giving drivers licenses to all those illegals is a nightmare waiting to happen, not that the liberals care.

Stage work stoppages? Awwwww, isn’t that cute! I can just see legitimate residents aliens walking off of good jobs so the wetbacks can get a free ride . . . . NOT!

At it’s worst, a few folks will have to go back to cutting their own grass

“Cedillo said keeping licenses out of the hands of immigrants won't necessarily halt terrorist acts, noting that, as American citizens, Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and Unabomber Ted Kaczynski had no trouble acquiring licenses.”

It’s not just that he’s being asinine but that he is unjustifiably arrogant as well.

I was kidding; Nativo is a well known MechA type of character that got booted from his Santa Ana school district position in a recall election this past spring.

"Along with work stoppages, the group intends to designate days on which supporters will not make purchases at stores or send their children to school."

Everyone is commenting on the work stoppage (less trash in the Home Depot parking lot)but what kind of genius keeps his or her kids out of school to punish someone else? I'm hoping this hold out lasts the rest of the term so all their kids get another shot at their current grade level, maybe their spanish will improve.

And, of course, since food stamps are always welcome at the liquor store, one day is as good as another.

And another:

"Cedillo said keeping licenses out of the hands of immigrants won't necessarily halt terrorist acts"

No, you moron, but hopefully it would halt SOME illegal aliens from driving, at least for a second, third, or fourth time.

More importantly, it will keep some illegals from voting in elections, a right preserved only for citizens of this country.

What a joke...

Half of them don't work anyway.

Private companies should be hired to find and get rid of illegals.

Does it mean we'll get a break from paying for their food stamps and special classes for non-English speakers? Viva la boycott!

Hey, there ya go! How about a taxpayer's boycott against spending on socialist programs and particularly those that support illegals?

what a bunch of frijoles.

This will be a "target rich" environment for the (former) INS, or Homeland Security to scoop these invaders up and toss them firmly on their duffs in Mexico.

Of course, it's all a pipe dream. I wish I could say it would happen.

Oy. Not an ounce of shame in some folks, is there? They got caught pushing something that about 2/3 of Californians oppose. And unlike some measures that just TURN OUT LATER to be unpopular, THIS one was demonstrably that unpopular before it passed and certainly before Davis signed it. He and the Legislature just keep on giving Californians The Bird, don't they? Grr.
