Thrill Ride To Dangle Passengers 900-Feet Over Vegas Strip
POSTED: 2:28 p.m. EDT October 17, 2003
UPDATED: 4:21 p.m. EDT October 17, 2003
A new thrill ride at the Stratosphere Tower will dangle passengers 900-feet above the Las Vegas Strip, according to a Local 6 News report.
The "X-Scream" is designed to give thrill seekers the ultimate adrenaline rush.

A video animation shows how riders will slide from one end to the other -- until they literally dangle over the strip.
The ride has already been tested in Utah, but designers say the experience won't be complete until it's placed at the edge of the Stratosphere Tower.
To install the ride, helicopters are being used to bring the giant parts in.
The tentative opening for "X-Scream" the ride is Oct 31 -- Halloween.

If that happens, start dressing your daughters in Burquas now so that they're used to it when it becomes the law.

I love roller coasters, as wild as possible. But one 900 feet up? Uh, no way.

Not much of a ride, but the tummy somersault factor is definitely way up there.

I thought they were going to bungy the thing off the edge or something. Now that would be a ride.

A spectacular accident waiting to happen. I was up on top of the Strat in July. It's showing its age. The laws of physics and the frailty of human safety measures will collide sooner or later. I'd sooner ride an Apache at max gross weight to the ground with dual engine failure and low rotor RPM than take a chance on that thing. Vegas being Vegas, when it happens, it'll make the news for about 30 minutes, then everyone will go back to the tables and slots, while the bulldozers arrive to clean up the wreckage and begin tearing down the Strat to build another Casino.

Last year, I went to the Strat. For folks that don't know, there are TWO rides up there! One is the aforementioned rollercoaster which winds it's way around the top of the spire. The real danger when I rode was to keep my head in for the steel beams that pass within a foot (at least seemingly) from your face.
Then there's the "ejection seat" ride. Basically, there is a radio tower that has four seats around it. Each seat holds 5 or 6 riders side-by-side. Once you're strapped in, you get a countdown and then you are boosted for about 100 feet up the tower! (Your're already on top of that damn spire!) It does this about four times before you finally stop.
Finally, there's what I call the freebie "vertigo ride." At night, while you're in line on the wind-swept spire, you can look out on the strip and find the pyramid-shaped Luxor hotel. At night, a vertical shaft of light reaches up into the night. Look at the pyramid and follow the beam of light to the stars. You then get a weird sense of vertigo and begin grasping for the rail, the wall, your neighbor, anything to make the sensation pass. Weird!
