A Shameless, Shameful, Vain Vanity
Posted on 10/17/2003 6:48:07 AM PDT by goliath
On October 9, 2003, the night before Rush Limbaugh came clean on his drug addiction, I posted the following vanity:
With my flame retardant suit snugly on, I must ask if anyone else who listened to Rush today noticed that he seemed to be off his game verbally. Slurring words, using the wrong words incorrectly etc... I heard only the last hour of the show today and it seemed (to me) obvious. AND, it sounded much like he did before his hearing loss when he use to comment on people who'd call to complain that he sounded drunk. My wife, who listened separately thought so, too. So the first thing I did upon arriving home was long onto Freerepublic to see if anyone else noticed.
The first couple of posters informed that Rush had admitted to being tired that day, to which I responded Thanks for that, as I said, I only heard the last hour and have no knowledge about what affect the types of pills he's been accused of taking have. But my brother claimed to have taken some of the same ones and said they made him very verbose and capable of talking lucidly for hours. Anyway, I hope Rush can soon tell us what's going on with this thing, I only get more skeptical the longer he stays silent and sounds tired.
Then, as I was writing a further explanation that it was the not the fact that I thought Rush was currently on drugs that made him sound weird, but, perhaps, because he was again coming down from them, the thread was pulled by an Admin Monitor for being "nonsense."
12 hours later Rush was admitting his addiction and entering rehab, proving that some of us can still be his fans yet retain our ability to think for ourselves. Sadly, as seen in many of the posts on the thread in question (which is printed below), many of Rush's fans are indeed mind-numbed robots, and some of those are running this board.

Probably a weak battery in his bionic ear.

HI, I wear a size medium cap. Does the ten foil one's run large in size. You left out your order link. How much commission does FR get for your vanity and hat business?

There was no degredation in analysis or critical thinking. If one is buzzed so heavily as to slur, thinking would be somewhat incoherent...

I heard him rant about the Wilson yellowcake hunt. He ended his rant by saying something's not right, who sent him to Niger. Of course, this is the same question Robert Novak asked that led to the current scandal back in July.
Yes, Rush is off his game. He apparently has lots on his plate these days.

You're probably on to something. He must be so worried about the plausible accusation of taking ten thousand pills, that he took twenty thousand, immediately before going on the air.

The accusations are that he was doing massive ammounts of drugs 2 years ago (90 pills a day); not that he is still doing drugs. Some have said that his deafness was cause by drug abuse. I had the show on the radio and listened in the early part of the first hour but got caught up in a long phone call. I didn't hear anything unusual.

I didn't notice this today but I have heard others make the same comment. I really didn't get to focus on him during work so I can't say.

When he opened the show, he complained of feeling fatigued for unknown reasons, and wondered aloud if it would be noticeable.

It won't matter, I, like so many before me, won't be back.I know this is supposed to be your opus & all, but I give it a 4 on the Opus Scale.

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.
I've lived a life that's full.
I've traveled each and ev'ry highway;
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.
Regrets, I've had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.
I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.
Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.
I've loved, I've laughed and cried.
I've had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.
To think I did all that;
And may I say - not in a shy way,
"No, oh no not me,
I did it my way".
For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows -
And did it my way!

"I know this is supposed to be your opus & all, but I give it a 4 on the Opus Scale." Wow, you are generous. My scoring would not have this Opus break over into whole numbers.
It has no pizzaz or beat, it just sorta lays there with an almost "Neener Neener" like quality.

Well, I did give him bonus points for complete sentences and correct spelling. Without those, it'd rank around 1.4.

What a bunch of waste reading this page is. Rush has a problem and is taking care of it. I think most of his 20 million readers are glad of this. We look forward to his return and are happy that will happen soon

OOOOOOOH an Opus list. Can I join please?
I'm not sure this ranks as an opus. An opus requires great thought, angst and passion. This is more of a minor pity party.

At some other sites you'd have had your account deactivated and you'd never get it back under any circumstances.

I have to agree with you. What happened doesn't seem right, sort of like the thought police. I think you deserve an apology. Don't think you'll get one from the ones who deleted your post(s) and suspended you so let me say:
I'm sorry this happened, hope it doesn't happen again.
And, look on the bright side, this post is still up. In a way, this is an apology in itself.
Best Regards.

You don't see me posting a vanity about it expecting others to bask in my reflective glory.
Had your prediction been yanked and your posting privileges suspended for posting it,
you could be expected to post a vanity about it when you were proven correct by events.
