Can't escape the opinion that if we were really serious about energy independence, we'd be there by now. This is a disturbing editorial that highlights how a lack of Congressional oversight has led not only to a waste of taxpayer dollars but to continued dependence on foreign oil.

Always interesting to see "$1 Billion in profits" in one paragraph and "$1 Billion in tax credits" in another. It's pure profit? No expenses at all? Energy is an economic topic, yes? This is an economics piece? Hello?

I don't believe in welfare.

Individual or corporate.

I also don't like the major media, Time Ragazine included. They don't like this corporate welfare because it isn't directed at one of their friends. They have no problem with corporate welfare as a policy.

I oppose it for friend and foe alike.

This tax break only makes Steve Forbes look like even more of a Genius.

The corruption "K Street" is all about the tax code, eliminate most of it and simplify it.

The Code should be a little book that fits in your shirt project, no more words than the Consitution and Bill of Rights period.

What is even crazier is no one here is talking about "Fluidized Beds" the ultimate technical solution to burning coal. Also you can burn garbage with fluidized beds and the waste can be mixed with asphalt to make great roads !

Er, excuse me...NOT ONE WORD about how the Enviro Whackos shut the "Oil Shale" industry in Rifle, not Parachute, Colorado.

Actually, in an accompanying article in Time there is exactly One Sentence Fragment about the enviros.

Nice effort at blame shifting, but it will NOT wash.

Subsidies and tax credits, ugh. Just let the market work.

Zoning laws promote more energy waste than anything - scrap em.

The things that I find disturbing about this piece are

1) Time thinks the problem is the tax loophole, rather than onerous taxes that make "spray-and-pray" attractive.

2) The some people consider giving someone a taxbreak a waste of taxpayer's money. My tax dollars are my money -- and Mariott's are theirs.

Mariott's a net tax payer. More power to 'em.
