The agony of defeat is just beginning to sink into the Democratic Party in California with Arnold Schwarzeneggers victory in the California recall election.
Now that a Republican has taken control of largely Democratic California, the Democrats have come to the realization that Schwarzenegger won because the people wanted him and not strictly because of Gray Davis unpopularity.
So the Democrats may encounter serious problems in next years elections. Exit poll data reveals that many minorities and labor unions, which normally favor the Democratic Party, voted to dispose of Davis and replace him with a Republican.
Donald Lambro of Town Hall reports, that Swarzenegger garnered some 17% of the black vote, while fellow Republican Tom McClintock received 6%. Likewise, 39 % of Hispanics voted Republican (30% Swarzenegger and 9% McClintock).
As if there arent enough obstacles for the Democratic Party to overcome, half of all union workers voted Republican. This is most definitely a devastating blow to the Democratic Party.
On the Republican side, Schwarzenegger is trying to capitalize on the votes of those who abandoned the Democrats, while Democrats scurry to win them back.
Meanwhile, leading Democratic officials, in an attempt to downplay the results of this election, claim that this big win for Republicans will have no impact on the 2004 elections.
Probably worthy of it's own post and I haven't gotten the hang of it yet...
Why would they? The Dems are mainly pitting whites against white (young against old, rich against poor, gays against straights, atheists against the religious, Jews againts non-Jews, etc, etc). Some minorities support the Democrats for that very reason. It's a way of using the system to get even for perceived past wrongs: slavery, land taken away, internment/detention camps, etc.
Then the Republicrats can proceed with the government-downsizing program they've been pursuing the last 3 years. You know, all the cuts and efficiencies they said they'd get right on, once they took control of the House, Senate and White House.
I love this limited-government effort they've been vigorously working on.
It would utterly destroy them nationwide. I would be shocked if that happened next year though. The DNC will take the time and spend the money for a first-class demonization of President Bush, followed by a first-class turnout operation throughout black neighborhoods. The California DP was caught flat footed, and I doubt the DNC will be.
