Lebanon won't let Palestinians buy land

By JPOST.COM STAFF

A bill which would have allowed Palestinians to buy property in Lebanon has been withdrawn, prompting accusations of racism and discrimination, the Arabic Aljazeera network reported.

An estimated 390,000 Palestinians live in Lebanon, half of whom live in camps.

On Monday any hopes of ever owning their own property were dashed when Lebanese Parliament speaker Nabih Berri withdrew draft legislation which would have lifted a ban on Palestinian refugees from owning property in Lebanon.

The current legislation forbids the acquisition of real estate by all non-Lebanese persons "who do not possess citizenship issued by a state recognised by Lebanon."

"[Berri] withdrew from the agenda the bill presented by 10 deputies which aimed to amend a text banning Palestinians from acquiring real estate," the dean of the house Kabalan Issa al-Khuri told Aljazeera.

"This subject is divisive among Lebanese," Berri said. "The acquisition by Palestinians of real estate would damage the Palestinian cause because that way the refugees would remain in Lebanon and never return to Palestine," he added.

Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri believes that the time was not right to grant Palestinians living in Lebanon such rights, but that the "unjust" ban would one day be lifted, the Arabic network reported.

This is part of the 55 year long Arab policy of not allowing Palestinian "refugees" to resettle and forcing them to live in squalid conditions. It makes for a ripe breeding ground for terrorism and allows the "refugees" to remain a powerful political issue. The main reason Palestinians continue to suffer is because of the actions of their own leaders and their Arab bretheren. If they really wanted a two state solution they had many opportunities to have one--including the recent Roadmap to nowhere.

Ever get the feeling that all these surrounding Arab countries have basically shat upon the Palis, refusing them residence in their countries, so that they could sit there in Isreal and be an all too willing supply of fresh bodies ready to persecute the Israelis as tools of those same Arab states? They get the Palis to do their dirty work, giving them lip service support while sitting there looking all pious and innocent.

And the stupid Palis fell for it hook, line, sinker and now, gaff hook, getting killed to make the Israelis look bad.

I shed no tears for the Palis, but they are getting sucked in by the rest of the Arab world and are too stupid to see it happening.

Good points!

Since 1948, what is the only country to allow Palestinians to become citizens and vote -- even hold public office...Israel!

One more reason to view any efforts by the islamic world which is over 600 times the size of Israel to bring peace to the Middle East with a jaundice eye, i.e. the defunct road map to peace. They won't even let their islamic brothers and sisters have land to live with their same faith brothers and sisters, yet expect Israel to open their borders to pali terrorists. Sheesh!

Sending them to France would be cruel and unusual punishment. Then again, maybe not. France is an Arab country after all. It's population may be less than 20% Muslim but it's government fits in nicely in the Arab world.

You are joking, right? Why would the E.U. and U.N. call attention to anything that puts anyone in the Arab world in a bad light? If they can't show the world how evil Israel is they aren't interested. Truth and justice are certainly of no interest to them if they don't further the anti-Israel agenda.

I'll bet Lebanon lets Syrians buy land (or maybe the Syrians just take it).

It's Syria's to begin with, right? I mean, the official Syrian position remains that Lebanon is part of Greater Syria.

We have three Middle Eastern sort of fast food type places where I live now. All are owned by expatriate Lebanese Christians. All hate the Syrians and the Palestinians for destroying their country. All like Israel, and one owner even told me that the best thing that could happen to Lebanon would be for Israel to take over the country.

Nobody in the press reports how much the Lebanese Christians have suffered, how many have been killed, and how many were driven from their homes. They used to be the majority in Lebanon. Nobody reports how these Christian Lebanese are overwhelmingly pro-Israel.

You are so right!

Palestinians are only tools for the rest of the Arab world and anyone who hates Israel.

Israel-haters never talk about how other Arab nations treat Palestinians.

I'm Lebanese, and you'll probably understand what I'm gonna be talking about.

Lebanon went through a 15 years civil war for such an issue. The palestinian presence.

1- For a country that counts around 3.5 millions, it's not easy to add up around 500,000!!!

2- The demography of Lebanon was always known as almost half christian, half muslim. However it has changed recently dure to Syrian oppression and led to mainly christian emigration, so what would happen if u add up 500 thou palestinians? You guess it...no more equilibrium.

3- Lebanon is LEBANESE before being ARAB. Therefore, Lebanon is a country by itself. There is no Arab cause. Lebanon is fed up with this stupid dream. We don't want Israel in Lebanon, we don't want Syria in Lebanon, and for sure we don't want the palestinians who did massacres and slaughters in Lebanon. Lebanon is for Lebanese...how hard could that be?

4- If the solution is for an arab country to adopt those refugees...Let egypt take them, or Iraq, they have enourmous lands. Lebanon is nothing but 10452 km sq.

5- So easy for you to throw theories in the air. But come and see the situation here. It's enough we have a puppet government led by Syria who are protecting terrorists like Hizbullah. We dont want any more of those! They want to free Palestine? Go do it there, and not from Lebanon!

6- Being a Lebanese patriot, I wouldn't want Palestinians to come and takeover my country like when they tried to during the lebanese civil war (which they triggered) and change the whole demography of the country.

7- The hell with the arab world cause. This propaganda has got to stop. Each country has probably its own cause or causes, but for sure there isnt any unified cause, and especially NOT the palestinian cause. I am WITH the palestinian human cause as long as it is done in Israel/Palestine/whatever. (Being with the cause is not being with the terrorist attacks nor being with full taking of israel...I believe that Palestine and Israel should exist with real borders to stop the shelling and to achieve peace, for the cause is PEACE and not bloodshed which happens from both sides.)
