Al-Qaeda member believed killed
From correspondents in Pakistan
October 16, 2003

A TOP al-Qaeda leader is believed to have died in a recent operation launched by the Pakistani army in the northwestern tribal region bordering Afghanistan, Information Minister Sheikh Rashid said today.

"An important member of al-Qaeda was believed to be among those killed in the Angoor Adda operation," the minister told AFP.

"He had a bounty on his head which was very large."

Pakistan earlier this month launched a major operation against suspected al-Qaeda fighters in the border town of Angoor Adda in South Waziristan tribal area.

The day-long operation on October 2 left eight al-Qaeda suspects killed and another 18 arrested. Two Pakistan army soldiers were also killed in the encounter.

So is this Khadr (doesn't seem likely to have a big bounty on his head), or someone else?

Pulled from a Reuters' report yesterday:

ISLAMABAD, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Pakistan said on Wednesday a senior al Qaeda official may be among the eight suspected militants killed in a clash with Pakistani forces near the Afghan border earlier this month.

"I can't confirm but there is an apprehension that there was a man who had a price on his head among those killed," Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed told a news conference. "He could be among the top 10 or 15 (al Qaeda) people," he said, without giving further details.

This is great news! It should be in the breaking news!

I don't necessarily think this is Breaking News material yet. It may well turn out to be Khadr and his son, which was reported a couple of days ago. But since that info is two days old, and this talk of a bounty has emerged, I'm starting to wonder (okay, hope!) that there's another big fish in this net.

Source link.

Reports emerging from the region claim Ahmed Said Khadr and one of his sons were killed during a raid on an al-Qaeda camp in Waziristan, in Pakistan's lawless tribal frontier region.

A press release issued by the Islamic Observation Centre in London and circulated on an Arabic Internet site announced the death of Mr. Khadr, calling him a "founding member" of al-Qaeda.

Unless it's the same guy from two days ago (see my Post #7).

Yes my friends. We have arrested and killed many hundreds of Al Qaedas in the frontier province. Our mighty operations are leaving the taliban remnants cowering in fear! Our intelligence and security services are closing the lid on the terrorist menace and prove our friendship with the united states! may we please now have our F16 upgrades? Long range fuel tanks would be nice.

don't trust the pakistans an inch when it comes to al qaeda. They are practically putting their hands on the bomb right now and are completely infected with sympathizers - who created the talibunnies and gave a pass to OBL (or his survivors).

So then you're denying that Pakistan has delivered KSM, and Ramzi, and Abu Zubaydah - among others - to our forces?

Each time they "deliver" somebody to us, Musharraf can be counted on to appear a few days later, demanding yet another multi-billion dollar grant. I suspect this will be no different.

As big as this?

I love modern reporting.

Okay. :-) Look, I realize there are frustrations (and I share them) with the slow moving of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and others regarding terrorism. But at least we're making legitimate progress (capturing/killing terrorists) with them. My real anger is directed at Syria and Iran, the latter for harboring senior AQ terrorists.
