LET'S FACE FACTS: WALTER CRONKITE IS SENILE!
ICONOCLAST ^ | by Denis Schulz

Posted on 10/15/2003 8:47:32 AM PDT by Apolitical

Walter Cronkite is an old man -- a very old man. He can remember things that happened a long time ago. He can remember when George S. Patton was slapping shell-shocked GIs across the face in Sicily during World War Two. He was there -- if not in person, at least in spirit. He was at the OK Corral when the Earps gunned down the Clantons, and he looked right straight into the TV cameras, and said, "You are there," and John Q. Couch-Potato believed him.

Walter has been in more places, has done more things, and has met more people than Irma La Duce could have met if she had lived a thousand years and every day had been a payday night. Walter knew them all -- the long and the short and the tall; the fat ones and the thin ones; Dean Acheson to Efram Zimbalist. He traveled from Aachen to Zanzibar, from Normandy to the OK Corral, and, apparently, from Oz to Shangrila.

But old age has been creeping up on Walter. He has become-what is that word -- senescent? Some might say Walter has entered his dotage. Every time he looks at Attorney General John Ashcroft he sees Torquemada.

"Torquemada, you might recall," Walter said, "was the 15th Century Dominican friar who became the grand inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition."

No, Walter, we don't recall Torquemada -- he was a bit before our time, but thanks for the history lesson.

If one didn't know better, one might think Walter was trying to taint Ashcroft's reputation through guilt by association. Ashcroft-Torquemada; Torquemada-Ashcroft. He has made that connection several times of late.

Is it possible Walter is confused? Yes, that must be it -- Walter is confused.

By they way, how old did you say you were, Walter? A pity.

Old folks tend to obsess about one thing or another as they progress down the road to senility. They get something stuck in their craw and they just won't let go -- like Granny Clampett with her possum pies or Grandpa McCoy with his limp; there was nothing wrong with that leg of his. Fortunately, Granny and Grandpa's obsessions were harmless. The danger from an obsession comes when the old geezer has just come out of a closet -- the liberal closet in Walter's case -- and is trying to make up for years of trying to appear fair and balanced.

Walter sees Torquemada, er, John Ashcroft, everywhere. According to Walter, "Ashcroft has earned himself a remarkable distinction as the Torquemada of American law. I'm not accusing...(him) of pulling out anyone's fingernails or burning people at the stake (at least I don't know of any such cases)." Heh, heh! A little humor there from Walter -- very little unfortunately.

Now let us ask Walter a question: How many people were burned alive at the Waco auto-da-fe under the auspices of Ashcroft's predecessor, Janet Reno? ....

America trusted the "Most Trusted Man in America" when he declared our victory in the Tet Offensive to be a defeat. The rest is history.

Poor Walter, he is suffering from a bad case of Old Geezer Syndrome. He can remember things that happened a long-long time ago, but he's having difficulty comprehending what's going on right under his nose -- especially since 9-11.

You can add Charley Reese and Joseph Sobran to the list, too.

This is an insult to senile patriots everywhere.

One can only chalk it up to senility if Cronkite was, at some point in his career, sane and sound. But as long as I know of his talking, he's been a vicious and one-dimensional Christophobe.

Walter and Andy...the Old Couple (well, the Old Odd Couple). I think it is pretty apparent that Andy would be the messy one. Although it may help Rooney's humor out because he could rant about Walter.

Maybe the Chinese could send Bill Clinton, Walter Cronkite and the Amazing Randy (from Rumson, NJ) up in a space capsule together for a few weeks.

Every time he looks at Attorney General John Ashcroft he sees Torquemada.

Until Ashcroft demonstrates that he knows the difference between
the Ten Amendments and the Ten Commandments,  Torquemada is an apt comparison.

Heck, his replacement, Dan Blather, was born Oct. 31, 1931! Sadly, in Wharton, Texas.:^(

Note to self: Send Cap'n Dan a nice e-card on his BD!

Answer: They are both Show-Me Staters.
