Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean has a problem. He's running for president as the candidate of candor - willing to speak his mind and tell the truth no matter the consequences.

Try squaring that image with the savvy political insider who struck a deal with Vermont's secretary of state to conceal papers related to his 11-year tenure as governor for 10 years from the date he left office.

What's Dean hiding? Maybe nothing. But Dean has said, ``We didn't want anything embarrassing appearing in the papers at a critical time in any future endeavor.'' Well, that sure is candid. But whatever may be embarrassing to Dean may prove illuminating to voters weighing whether he ought to get their support. Dean should voluntarily release the papers.
