International Campaign Underway To Curb Small Arms
10/14/2003 MO<

The International Action Network on Small Arms, comprised of 550 organizations in 100 countries, has launched a campaign to enact a global treaty to reduce the international weapons trade, Reuters reported Oct. 9.

"Small arms are the new threat of mass destruction," said Rebecca Peters, head of the International Action Network on Small Arms. Joining the group in its campaign are Amnesty International and Oxfam.

According to Peters, 500,000 people are killed from small weapons each year. It is estimated that there are 650 million light weapons in circulation, which translates to one for every 10 people on earth.

"That's incredible. Civilians possess more weapons than all the soldiers and police in the world," Peters said.

The focus of the campaign is small arms purchased illegally by individuals or crime gangs. Peters said the campaign "is seeking to make governments and the public aware of the problem and to put in place a universal treaty to control these weapons."

And he says that as if it were a bad thing! It's a very good thing actually. The big killers of the 20th century were governments, not private indivduals.

And the problem with this is...?

That most of those civilians are in the US, and far too few in the third-world hell-holes where they'd really make a difference.
