And the problems continue

This is today's editorial from the Sierra Vista Herald.
For education and discussion:
The federal fiscal year has just ended. With it comes the final tally of what illegal immigration is doing to our great county.
Unbelievable as it may be, Cochise County was the site for nearly one fifth of all illegal immigration apprehensions in the nation.
Two thousand miles of unprotected border with Mexico, and little old Cochise County leads the way in this regrettable statistic.
We wish we could trust the government to tell the truth in regards to this amazing indicator. Our cynicism however, won't let us.
How is it that the great illegal immigration funnel just happens to be in the Tucson Sector of Arizona? It couldn't be political, could it? After all, the funnel could just as easily be in California with its 54 presidential electoral votes or Texas with its 32 electoral votes. Right?
Unfortunately, for the mostly politically powerless in Southern Arizona, where half the residents north of Tucson can't even locate the county on a map, the fight is being fought in a political vacuum. Despite efforts by Rep. Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz., the powers in Washington, D.C., will never worry about this funnel since it is happening to a county where just 118,000 Americans call home.
Heck, that doesn't even qualify as a suburb in such great cities as San Diego and Houston. If the funnel somehow found its way to those cities or some other major American port, you can believe the national politics of illegal immigration would soon move to the forefront.
While we appreciate the efforts of the U.S. Border Patrol, it's never going to be enough. The reasons are simple, too few Americans to make a difference in any politician's future, too little reason to upset national governments, and too much money being made by U.S. private businesses.
As the new fiscal year begins, those living along the border with Mexico in our fair county are faced with living in a continuing nightmare.
For them, every day, it's a real reminder of how power in America makes a difference.
Unfortunately for them and the rest of us, we predict no shift in the political fortunes surrounding this terrible situation in the coming fiscal year. The best that can be hoped for is that our national Arizona representatives can continue to sneak in appropriations in various bills which will address some of the larger, social impacts this situation is causing.
For the private citizen, for the trashed desert environment, and for the rest, the only sobering advice we can offer is to hope it doesn't get any worse.

The traffic through our county is immense, only a small percentage of those who come across our 80 miles of border are apprehended.
The rest of them end up fouling your neighborhood.

I was appalled at these figures. I live in an urban area in the Northeast and can't imagine what it must be like for people in Cochise County.
The government appears to have abandoned you.

The "government" has abandoned the whole darn country to this invasion. It is only a matter of time before the impact is felt nation-wide.

It's pretty much as our editor points out...we don't have the electoral clout to force the issue, not like San Diego did 10 years ago.
The problem is that by not plugging this gap, the flood of immigrants inundates the entire country...not just us.
If you pay careful attention to the news, you'll find violent crime caused by illegal immigrants (though they're rarely characterized as such) happening nationwide. There were just reports of gang-related shootings/deaths in NYC, eastern PA, and Wash., D.C. during this last week. Gangs of illegals.
And many of them are crossing right here.
And here's something else folks aren't talking about.
This was found in an abandoned backback along an illegal immigrant trail back in February, and turned over to the FBI. The photo was published in the Herald.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I'm so disillusioned with GWB. I was sure that he would address this problem but so far, nothing.
Any presidential candidate who vows to stop the flow of illegals would get my vote.
The copy of Arabic notes is frightening. We are going to get what we deserve if we don't close our borders soon. What I can't understand is what on earth the Department of Homeland security does. What a complete waste of time and money if the borders aren't secure.

It's even worse when you compare Cochise to the State of Rhode Island.
Cochise County
Land Area: 6,215 Sq. Miles.
Rhode Island
Land Area: 1,231 sq Miles.

Hi folks,
Don't you just love this place? Are you becoming addicted to FR? I am a Freepaholic. I have to tune in every day. This is the best place on the planet to get unbiased news, and the best analysis, bar none. You know that. I know that.
Because of the free exchange of information, and high level analysis, this site is one of the top sites in the world. There are over 1 million threads here, for you to peruse. And your comments are seen by everyone, in every country.
Did you know this site was started by one determined, stubborn son-of-a-gun who is in a wheelchair? Do you know that to this day he is still in charge? Do you know that this place is funded entirely by donations? Nobodys getting rich off this place. Its 3 months at a time.
Some of the brightest people in the world come here daily, to learn, and read what YOU have written. People like Rush (bless him), Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, both Houses of Congress, their staffs, World leaders, and all freedom lovers come here.
In some countries, you could go to jail for posting here. For real. It's that powerful.
Communists in power HATE this site. They can't control the propaganda. Come to think of it, communists NOT in power hate it, too. So does the Democrat leadership.
Do you want this site to stay here? There is no membership fee. The fundraisers are to keep it going, 3 months at a time. Think about that. 3 months at a time.
China would love this place to fail. So would Chavez, Castro, the idiot running North Korea, Tom Daschle, and Hillary.
I know it sounds like such a little amount, but I am humbly asking you to consider donating just $3 a month. A dime a day. I know it sounds like nothing, but it is everything. It really is. Put it on a credit card, and that's that. The link is at the bottom of the main page, way, way down. You will join us freedom lovers who are committed to spreading the word, and letting people all over the world have a place they can get unbiased information. Your dime a day is 100 times more than the guy in China who is reading this can afford. And he will go to jail if he is caught reading this. Think about that.
I've been here since '97, and know how this site has changed the world. Become a permanent part of it. I am asking you, personally.
Please. Your pride will swell, and rightly so. It feels good.
That guy in China, wanting freedom, depends on YOU.

I fear it is going to take one of two events to get the attention of our elected, so-called leaders: 1)a 9/11 event set off in the heart of downtown Los Angeles directly linked to Islamic border-jumpers who came across disguised as "poor Mexicans looking for work", or 2) a major disease epidemic with about a 50% mortality rate decimating the American Southwest again directly traceable to border-jumpers.

I'm so disillusioned with GWBYour disillusionment will turn into outright anger if Bush wins in California in 2004. That win, based on pandering, aided by a liberal governor is going to be the death nell for immigration regulation, even though the economy of the southwest will be in tangles in just ten years if the present trend continues.

Any presidential candidate who vows to stop the flow of illegals would get my vote. If, for example, a Democrat candidate promises to close the borders, do you thing his/her party would ever let that happen? Same with a pro-life Democrat candidate; a pro-gun one; a pro-smoking one, a pro tax-cutting one? Empty promises aimed at gullible voters.

A friend of mine yesterday offered what at first appeared to be a rather silly solution to our immigration problem. Make Mexico our 51st state or even up to three new states.
Allow Mexicans up to 6 senate seats and a whole raft of congresscritters. Allow US enterprises free reign in Mexico and use Mexican oil profits to finance a raft of saftey nets that give Mexican's a reason to stay near home and still elevate their standard of living.
The cost, probably less than $3B. Might even be as bloodless as Iraq if we promise that the six ruling families are gone. If we advertise that this new state(s) will be democratic the average Mexican will probably assist in the invasion.
This idea may not be as foolish as I first imagined. The cost alone of adequately protecting our boarders would be staggering in comparison to a quick invasion with tactical support within range of our domestic bases.

Sadly,I don't know if I'd trust any candidates of any party with their campaign promises.

The major parties set the political agenda for the government. Vote for the major party that is closest to your way of thinking. The two parties are not the same.
