Will Iraq Establish Islamic Sharia Law?

A poll of 50 Iraqi university professors, attorneys and legal experts found that 70 percent favor a secular constitution.

CBN.com – The United States wants Iraq to start working on a new constitution, but some leaders in Iraq want that nation to become an Islamic state.

In a final drive to win U.N. Security Council backing for a new multinational force in Iraq under command of the United States, the Bush Administration is offering more sovereignty to Iraq's governing council.

The resolution will also give the Iraqi Governing Council until Dec. 15 to submit a timetable for holding elections and writing a new constitution. There are fears that that new constitution will establish Islamic Sharia law in Iraq. Article 4 of the Iraqi Constitution states that 'Islam is the religion of the state.'

U.S. Administrator Paul Bremer reportedly said the British Constitution has a state religion, and he doesn't see anything wrong with a similar situation in Iraq. But everywhere, Islamic Sharia law has been instituted, human rights have been violated, and non-Muslims have been persecuted.

Sheikh Hadi Hussein al-Ghasragi al Dawa said, "The Islamic Sharia should be the foundation of our country. All the citizens, including Christians, Jews and others who belong to different religions, must follow the strict laws of Islam."

But a poll of 50 Iraqi university professors, attorneys and legal experts found that 70 percent favor a secular constitution.

Meanwhile, President Bush is denying charges that his administration's Iraq policy is in disarray. He says "good progress" is being made toward the goal of a "free Iraq." And a new Gallup poll found that 71 percent of Baghdad residents felt U.S. troops should not leave in the next few months. Just 26 percent felt the troops should leave that soon.

Is this Foggy Bottom Bremer nuts?

Bremer doesn't find anything wrong with a theocracy? Where are all the church-state 'seperationists'? Two words AmbASSador: SECULAR GOVERNMENT![in Iraq] This is important, because for our nation to foot the bill of 100-billion+ dollars and young lives lost to free the Iraq and especially the Shiites from Saddam only to become an Islamic-Sharia-theocracy is an outrage!

The President and Congress must hear about this! Foggy Bottom Paul Bremer is one of those Foggy Bottom types whose policy in Afghanistan and now Iraq is to undo everything we fought and died for and are spending billions of taxpayer money?

Uh, sorta. Britain has an unwritten constitution. The sovereign is the official head of the Anglican Church, but the heir to the throne has indicated he'd like to change that. His ancestors persecuted countless dissenters. The history of state religions in Europe is a good example to follow.

The history of state religions in Europe is not a good example to follow.
