Richard Lee Daniel was 15 when he went on a crime spree that started with seven stolen vehicles and ended in the brutal beating and robbery of a 73-year-old woman.

The North Fort Myers boy is 16 now and began paying the price of his actions Monday when he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

I have come to the conclusion that Libertarains on FR like Blackbird guide their lives by the tune of the Monty Python song "Spam", except only that "spam" has been replaced by the word "drugs".

"drugs, drugs, drugs, drugs, drugs, drugs, drugs, drugs, DRUGGGS!!!!" ad nausieum.

Richard Lee Daniel's attorney failed to mention his painful back surgery. Then he could have taken care of his pain responsibly in a Denny's parking lot.

Once again Dane, since it's been awile since we've spoke, I'll remind you that I am not a Libertarian, I am a Registered Republican (tho I do have my doubts as to how much longer that'll be true). Secondly, in my 43 years on this planet, I have never seen/heard anything Monty Python, so your wit (at least in your mind)obviously escapes me! Keep up the good fight! Blackbird.

There is a long honorable history of alcohol use in our Western society back to the Bible and beyond.

There was a time when it could have been argued that "There is a long honorable history of slavery in our Western society back to the Bible and beyond." Was that a good reason to not end slavery? The bottom line is that if marijuana is harmful enough to ban, then alcohol is doubly so. But Prohibition failed and the War On Some Drugs is failing; we were wise to end the former and would be wise to end the latter.

Prohibition suceeded, more than it failed. One aspect of it failed. It was permanent. But prior to Prohibition the US had indeed become a bit too drunken. The distilled spirits industry had become a bit too efficient and manufacturer and distribution! Too much to drive cars safely for sure -- according to the per cap numbers of bars there was almost a bar on every corner. When Prohibition finally did end, and that was some years later then it should have, imo -- the alcoholism epidemic had been stopped, drinking was way down. It also suceeded because it was Constitutional!

The Drug War has failed. Failed because it's unconstitutional. Failed because even were drugs banned constitutionally -- per amendment process followed by the Alcohol Prohibition -- the methods employed are overly intrusive, beyond the protections of the BOR. Failed becuase it PREVENTS society from learning to deal with, from being able to deal with drug abuse, addiction, proper use.

It has failed because it fills our prisons and empties many children's homes of fathers. It fails because like all dictatorial tyrannies of the nanny state, it refuses to recognize Adulthood, and it restrains no drug as much as it does restrain Liberty.

It's the drugs' fault! = It's the gun's fault!

Dumb logic.

Heroin and cocaine (crack being a form of cocaine) are useful drugs. Useful in proper use. Misused they are dangerous. Poison. I agree that crack is extreemly dangerous. So is strychnine, for that matter.

Yet, they all should be available for responsible adults to own and use. A 12 gauge riot gun is deadly. Designed to be deadly, death and injury ARE its usage. Do you ask to ban 12 guages? Or pistols?

Cars kill. We should all use trains and buses driven by state-workers, eh?

You potheads are a mixed up ball of confusion. Alcohol's history goes way back even in America. While potheads have become numerous only since the 1960s. You won't find pot mentioned in the Bible but many references to wine and the wine is honored.

Pot is never (rarely if ever?) mentioned in the classic works of Western literature yet alcohol is. Libertarians come down as destroyers of Western cultural traditions which fits in great with your acultural, ahistoric, atomistic, ego tripping philosophy of me, my and mine. At the same time you seek to elevate poisons that are foreign to Western tradition. Poisons such as heroin, crack and methedrine. Pot is the drug for the stupid and you want to elevate and equate it with alcohol. Few buy this garbage.

Hey, for all I know you will dig up some medicinal uses for crack. Maybe it relieves anxiety? I'll leave it to you.

And when Rush Limbaugh steals seven trucks and sets them ablaze while beating a 73-year-old granny with a flashlight, I'll be glad to throw him in prison and throw away the key.

Rush didn't do any of those things. Of course, he was rich and didn't need to steal for his drug habit....

Just remember, alcohol has killed more people, destroyed more families than any drug in history....Alcohol is a mass murdering drug....Ask any seasoned cop......

"Heroin and cocaine (crack being a form of cocaine) are useful drugs."

I don't know about heroin, but when I broke my nose and the doctor had to rebreak it he fill it with gause soaked in cocain. I was really shocked and kinda scared because of all the negative press that the drug receives. I never again had an urge to go buy an 8 ball and go crazy. I never even wanted to give it a try when I had the opportunity. I have seen people on it and I just can't see the thrill. Of course the dosage was medicinal rather than the street dosage a recreational user gets.

Cocaine is used as a topical anesthetic in some very delicate surgeries.

So are you going to ban alcohol and legalize pot? You have given the negatives on alcohol but it's use is traditional in the West. Pot is a 3rd world drug. That's where it's native to and that's who were (virtually) the only consumers before the 1960s. Before the 1960's pot was consumed by Mexicans, by jazz musicians, by some bohemians/hipsters and in the Black ghetto.

Now it's all over America as stupid people compete to see who lower their IQ quicker. A negative for this nation.

"Heh. It ain't about you and what cocaine does/doesn't to you."

What? I was giving a case where there is a positive use of cocain in support of the poster's position. In addition, I stated that a dosage had been found that didn't send me into addiction. I don't understand your response.
