Strayhorn on run for governor: 'Never say never'06:22 PM CDT on Monday, October 13, 2003
HOUSTON State Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn stopped just short of firing the opening shot in the 2006 Texas governors race on Monday taking dead aim at what she considers to be the shortcomings of Gov. Rick Perry.
Asked specifically if she plans to run, Ms. Strayhorn wouldnt say yes, but wouldnt rule it out.
Never say never, she said.
Ms. Strayhorn, the target of Republican legislative action Sunday to remove a pair of performance review programs from her office, was expected to use a luncheon speech before a business group to respond.
She did not disappoint, honing previous indirect criticism of the governor into direct shots at him for cuts in funding for health care and education and for the loss of bipartisanship in state government.
Texas taxpayers and Texas school children and the Texas comptrollers office are being punished for me telling the truth, Ms. Strayhorn said.
She listed her truth-telling as announcing budget deficits earlier this year, saying there was $700 million more money available to ease healthcare cuts, and lashing out at $2.7 billion in fee increases, even though taxes werent raised.
This move started in the governors office months ago and it ended in the governors office yesterday," she said. "Last Friday, behind closed doors in the pink granite building [the capitol], the governor told the House Republican Caucus he wanted these programs stripped ... because it was personal."
Ms. Strayhorn then offered her own list of what is personal to her, including 160,000 Texas children whos lost health insurance, thousands of lost jobs, skyrocking homeowner taxes, inequities in education all under this governor.
My telling the truth is apparently what the governor takes as personal, Ms. Strayhorn said.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Perry said he met with the House caucus and urged passage of the government reorganization bill that included changes in Ms. Strayhorns responsibilities but that there was nothing personal about it.
In a written statement, Gov. Perry defended his record, saying he helped balance the budget without new taxes, limited tort lawsuit awards to save jobs and increased overall health funding by $1 billion despite a revenue shortfall.
"Texas legislators just completed the most successful session in
decades, the statement said. I am very proud of the conservative record we have established.

Sour grapes ?? ...
I'm tired of her. I'll never vote for her again.
I got the impression that The Dallas Morning News was gleeful to publish this article. Of course, they were rooting for their 'heroes' fleeing to NM and Okla, so we know where they stand in the political spectrum of things. When someone in the state GOP takes a stand against redistricting when it's in the voters interest to do so AND GOES AGAINST their own party, and HINTS they might run against the incumbent GOP that has delivered, I gotta wonder about that person ...
This should read ...when it's in the voters interest to do REDISTRICTING ...
I'm saying "never."
She's finished in Republican politics in Texas.
And Bush ought to fire her incompetent son. He's supposed to be articulate, and he doesn't even meet the Joe Lockhart standard.
*PING!*
As always, a FReep mail will get you on or off this Houston topics ping list.
Civil War ? That ended 140 years ago. It's politics as usual. Sigh ...
Thanks ! :O)
There are 27 statewide offices in Texas, and all 27 are held by Republicans. There is only one of those Republicans who is trying to cause trouble.
It's not a civil war. It's a problem child.
And Rick Perry had better have somebody looking over his mother's shoulder, lest she cook the books in preparation for her run for governor.
Yeah. 'Problem child'. What are gonna do with that girl ??Say G'night, Carole. :O)
