The 34-year-old principal of a local middle school collapsed and died Saturday during a game of flag football.
Roger Slagle, principal of Sellman Middle School in Madeira, died from an undiagnosed heart problem, WLWT Eyewitness News 5 reported.
Slagle worked in the district for nine years. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, ages 5 and 7. Slagle's wife is expecting the couple's third child in April, WLWT reported.
Students at Sellman spent Sunday writing farewell messages and leaving flowers on the school's steps.
"Everybody was crying because he was always there for us," student Christy Spink said. "We knew him since kindergarten."
"On Friday, he came into my chorus class and played 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' on the piano," student Katie Scherer said.
Grief counselors will be available for students Monday at the school.

Grief counselors will be available for students Monday at the schoolAs tragic as this story is, I can't for the life of me understand the role of "grief counselors". Do these students not have parents to guide them through their grief?

As tragic as this story is, I can't for the life of me understand the role of "grief counselors".Yes, and who searches them out and hires them? They seem to come out of the woodwork.

See, all that activity and physical fitness gets you nowhere. Jim Fixx, marathon runner? Dead.
Park your LaZBoy by the fridge, throw your feet up, have a smoke, have a beer and relax a while.

Any more about the heart condition?

"Grief counselor" has to be among the Top Five Totally Unnecessary Alleged Careers.

Those "grief counselors" are useless. They are usually not needed because friends seek out friends to help ease the loss.

Happy Birthday! Remember that you're only as young as you feel.
This man had a previously unknown heart condition. He was living a very active and highly productive life. Also it's very sad because his wife is due to deliver their third child in April. Sounds like he was a popular principal, too.

Just my observartion that the "grief counselors" are a reinforcement of the principle that the individual is incapable of "piloting his own ship" "I don't feel happy so I must be a victim."

I'm not sure that parents would be allowed to be on school property with their children during the day. Grief counselors probably stay at the school for a day or two and counsel the kids in small groups and/or on an "as-needed" basis.
Hopefully the grief counselors who show up at schools are screened, background checked and hired by the local school district.

LOL! Sounds like a plan, and I'll think about it right after I finish my work-out.
