The secretary of state's office is important, not only because it's responsible for elections but because it's responsible for commercial record-keeping. The good news is that the Republican Party has put up a superbly qualified candidate for the position.

Incumbent John Y. Brown III has done a good job, modernizing the operation while urging more efficient and effective election equipment and procedures.
