Koch Criticizes Charges Against Norman
NEW YORK -- Democratic leaders including former mayor Ed Koch criticized the indictment of Assemblyman Clarence Norman on Saturday saying that Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes was using the case to attract publicity.
Norman, 52, was released on $25,000 bail Friday following an arraignment in state Supreme Court in Brooklyn. He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted on charges of grand larceny and failing to report a campaign contribution.
Koch said that the charges against Norman should have been sent to the Assembly Ethics Committee, but not to a grand jury.
"It's an outrage what Joe Hynes has done in indicting Clarence Norman," Koch told The New York Times in Sunday editions. "This district attorney is out of control in my judgment. This is not prosecution, it's persecution."
He told the Daily News and the New York Post that Norman is being humiliated and that the charges are nonsense.
Other leaders echoed Koch's sentiment.
"I am personally offended and disgusted by the tenor of this investigation," City Councilman David Weprin said in Sunday editions of Newsday. "Clearly there may have been errors of judgment, but (Norman) is becoming a scapegoat in the process."

Same old liberal Democrat spiel when they get caught. They are never wrong, everything is a vast right wing conspiracy, everything is politically motivated and it depends on what the word "illegal" means.
You cant bet your last buck no Liberal is ever guilty of doing wrong and you can bet the $hithouse they will never admit it.

How typical. How pathetic. If the Assemblyman had had an "R" beside his name they would be celebrating this victory over the "lawless" instead of whinning.

I guess Ed had to shore up his Rat bona fides with the locals after proclaiming his support for, and intention to vote for Pres. Bush.
