Hadn't even considered the deadlocked convention scenario.

That's the scenario I believe in. Hillary doesn't want to run in an extended primary (I don't think she could stand the scrutiny). But she could be the "party savior" at the convention.

And the GOP convention is so late (early Sept?) that the real race will be quite compressed, and she can hope to get by on the "celebrity factor".
That's the message they took from the CA recall - a short campaign and a celebrity factor are winners.

The October 4th date is nonsense. At that point in 1991, Bill Clinton was almost unknown (despite his speech at the 1988 convention), and he wasn't the spouse of an ex-President. The same isn't true of Hillary. If the polls say Clark is beating Bush when half the country doesn't know who Clark is, it must be very tempting for Hillary to make a run for it this time...and she can wait a while longer to see how the wind is blowing. She won't need a weatherman to tell her.

Yup. And there's a perfectly legal way to change candidates up until the election. Just tell voters that a vote for the Democratic nominee is a vote for Hillary. Then they can have the Democratic electors vote for Hillary. Perfectly legal. Heck, even honest if they make a big publicity blitz during the week before the election (when, face it, most voters only begin to pay real attention to the race).

Hillary could easily step in as late as the convention next year. She has instant name recognition and millions of slavering fans. She has the entire mainstream press in her pocket. And she already has an organization in place. It's called the DNC.

I agree 100%. She wants the presidency given to her as payback for sticking with Billdo through his many scandals.

she CANNOT WIN..

From your keyboard to God's monitor.

I'm sure that she wants to run in '04, and the spectacle of Florida, the Wellstone funeral, and the CA recall will be multiplied exponentially. Bush will be trashed as no one has been trashed before, and hillary will be touted on every news program, news magazine, radio program, TV show, etc., etc., etc., as the next coming. The movie Wag the Dog will be the model as every column of the filthy mass and popluar media will be marshalled in a tremendous, awe-inspiring rat media perfect storm.

It's a brilliant plan for a pre-911 world. But the American people will react the same way as they did to Wellstone and recall. Bush will be reelected.

Bring it on. Let's just get it over with once and for all.

Hadn't thought about that, often the vice presidential candidate on a losing ticket becomes the early front runner four years later. That happened with Edmund Muskie, Walter Mondale, Joe Lieberman, and if you'll allow the lapse of time, Bob Dole.

That's why its imperative for Dean to get the nomination. I hereby withdraw my support of Al Sharpton in all polls that I freep!

I'm wondering if the people who like her will be as enthused with her five years from now? Five more years of Hill and Bill 'bloopers' would be good for us!

The specter of a Hill and 1st gentleman Bill administration will be too tempting for ALL demos and some rinos... and with Weasly Clark as Vice... actually Bill in the white house as the 1st, 1st gentleman will capture all minds.. some to glee and others to pukeing fits...BUT its high drama and will not be neglected.. just getting around the 2 term rule by demos is a enough to make it happen..

Also, it will be announced at the convention so pubbies will have little time to react, not that pubbies react quickly to anything anyway... demos will not pass this up... count on it... the press will treat the event as the return of Jesus Christ... I already feel sick...

some political experts say the drop-dead date has already passed for Sen. Hillary Clinton . . .

That date passed long ago.

Equivalently, the losing VEEP candidate was not **nominated** next time in the case of Stevenson/Kefauver, Nixon/Lodge, Goldwater/Miller, Humphrey/whoeveritwas, McGovern/Shriver, Ford/Dole, Mondale/Ferraro, Dukakis/whoever, Bush/Quayle, and Dole/Kemp.

In short, there is no positive correlation here whatever, but instead a highly negative one, and ''front-runner'' is a term that's only important to the weasels in the lamestream commentariat. Gee, that's 10 of the past 11 Presidential elections, actually 11 of the past 12, because Stevenson's running mate in 1952 (that guy from Alabama)wasn't nominated in 1956, either. Only terminally Mondull managed to go from losing VEEP candidate to (thankfully) losing Prez candidate...at least w/in the past 50 yrs.
