Grand Forks Herald ^ | 10.12.03

The Grand Forks Police Department was alerted to a piece of construction equipment being operated in an erratic manner early Saturday morning.

Upon arrival at the 3400 block of 32nd Ave. S., police found the equipment, a John Deere Crawler/Loader, parked on top of a vehicle. The operator of the vehicle had fled the area on foot. A damaged vehicle was parked in the Branigan's Restaurant parking lot, police reported.

Investigation revealed that the equipment was stolen from a construction site in the 3300 block of 36th Ave. S. The parked vehicle, a few street signs, and a small tree were damaged during the incident, the police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Grand Forks Police at 787-8000.

Just damn.

If you want on the new list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...

[As i mentioned, the B/C & JD! lists are going to float into and out of whack over the forseeable future, while I try to cobble a rig back together for myself. My apologies for any incovenience or misunderstandings in this time frame. New signups/removals may be flaky in this time-frame as well; please bear with me, and keep in mind you may have to FReepmail me more than once for me to get it done. Thanks again!]

Uh..yeah, parking construction equipment on top of cars is rather erratic. Is there some super secret, stupid journalists' award competition we don't know about?

Did the destroyed vehicle have one of those multi-tone car alarms?

If it was a humvee, or such, I might be tempted.
But construction equipment isn't my thing either.

being operated in an erratic

Parking on top of a car is rather precise than erratic.

The thing I'll always remember about Grand Forks (totally unrelated to this thread, but credick where credick is due) is how Grand Forks Grocery had just taken delivery of several thousand dollars worth of our frozen scallops right before those disastrous floods they had up there about a dozen years ago.

Unlike a "big city" distributor who'd have gone defunct on this open account in ten seconds, they wrote a letter to their suppliers asking for a little understanding if they were a month or so late in paying their bills.....damned if they beat their own deadline by two weeks!

In the business world, this little incident really falls into the "Just Damn!" category!

(From that point on, if they'd have wanted a hundred thousand dollars worth of Australian lobster tails on open account, we would have done it without a second thought)...there's a lot to be said for Flyover Country.

This isn't really that uncommon an occurence. The same thing happened to me in San Francisco in 1983 except it was a Caterpillar 950 rubber-tired loader.

I managed to take out 4 cars, one had to be totalled. It's what happens when small cars get in the way.

BTW, does anybody know what the statute of limtations is for this sort of thing?
