I think that Congressman Richard Burr has the edge, though he's not assured of victory. In the last election, Bowles spent $7 million of his wife's money, but lost by 9%. In addition, Burr isn't nearly as well-known as Elizabeth Dole was, or even as Bowles is. Yet the latest poll on the race shows Burr leading Bowles by 43% to 37%. And to top it off, George W. Bush remains more popular in North Carolina than he is nationwide.

NC won't be a slam dunk, but I think Burr will beat Bowles, Blue, Etheridge or anyone else. Remember, this is the NC Senate seat that goes GOP on presidential election years and goes RAT on off years.

Roll Call said that Bowles was announcing his run, and Etheridge could follow soon. I hope Etheridge runs and (i)opens up his GOP-leaning House seat and (ii) creates a bloody three-way RAT primary where none of the candidates can get 40%, thus leading to an even nastier run-off.
