Lamutt kicks off congressional bid (R-GA-6)
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | April 4, 2003 | JENNIFER BRETT

State Sen. Robert Lamutt on Thursday became the latest to announce he is running for Congress.

The east Cobb Republican is one of a gaggle of politicians who have been pondering a run ever since incumbent Republican Johnny Isakson announced he's running for the U.S. Senate. Former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr also is seeking the 6th Congressional District seat.

"Over the past eight years, I have had the privilege and honor of representing the people of Cobb and Cherokee counties, working hard for their interests in the General Assembly," Lamutt said in a statement.

His top issues include "the over-taxation of individuals and the over-regulation of the small businesses," as well as improvements in transportation, education and the environment. And, of course, the war with Iraq.

"As the president continues to prosecute the war on terror, and moves to disarm the dictator of Iraq, he will need staunch allies to make sure the United States has the tools to defend her people and her interests," he said.

Lamutt, a property manager and investor, has said he is prepared to spend up to $1 million of his own money in the race.

Do we know anything about this guy?

In other news, Mike Kenn ISN'T running, which is all for the best, since he's not quite conservative.

Politics1.com lists state rep Mark Burkhalter, state sen Chuck Clay, and state sen majority leader Tom Price as other possibles. Bob Barr is the only other announced candidate.

One of Lamutt's bills to defang the labor unions' political machine:

"A BILL to be entitled an Act to amend Article 1 of Chapter 5 of Title 21 of the O.C.G.A., relating to general provisions relative to ethics in government, so as to regulate political contributions and expenditures by labor organizations and separate segregated funds thereof; to amend Article 2 of Chapter 6 of Title 34 of the O.C.G.A., relating to membership in labor organizations, so as to regulate certain political contributions; to regulate deductions from employees' earnings of contributions to labor organizations or separate segregated funds thereof to be used for political purposes; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes."

Lamutt has also cosponsored legislation for tort reform, cutting pay for legislators and state elected officials, allowing home schoolers to take part in public school extracurriculars, and two-thirds majority for tax increases.

Now if we can confirm this guy is pro-life, I think we have our guy in the 6th to stop Barr. He's gonna have to raise some serious money (perhaps Linder can help him) and slam Barr over the "musical chairs" he's been playing with shopping for districts.

Those idiots Baxter and Galloway in the 'Atlanta Journal-Constitution' called Lamutt and the others running in the primary (apart from Mike Kenn) as conservatives moving toward the middle to attract votes. However, those two probably think anybody slightly to the right of Isakson is a flaming conservative.

The Urinal-Constipation is always good for some laughs, especially the Bonnie, ahem, Shirley, Franklin piece. They probably think Isakson is too hard-right...

I know his campaign director, JB, during this period. He was quite inexperienced and as result no longer in politics.
