I'm certainly no expert on SD politics, but I'm assuming Thune would have a good chance of taking out Daschle in 2004. Assuming that's true, why not do it, rather than running someone who probably wouldn't win and waiting till 2008 to pick up a seat?

You are correct. Thune should move now to challenge Daschle, particulary with Bush at the top of the ticket next year. Thune is a very attractive candidate, Janklow is not.

Additionally, saving the Daschle seat will bankrupt other RAT campaigns nationwide.

Finally, Thune may actually scare Daschle out of running for re-election, because everybody knows he's a crybaby and a coward.
