Grant, Miller Compete For NC's New Seat In Congress

POSTED: 9:51 p.m. EDT October 20, 2002

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Brad Miller talks about his record on education and health insurance in the General Assembly. Carolyn Grant emphasizes her history operating small businesses and growing up on a Georgia farm. How their messages will translate on November 5th is largely a mystery in the first election for the 13th District, North Carolina's newest congressional seat.

Miller, a Democratic state senator, says his legislative history and many endorsements are proof he can things done.

Grant, a Republican who ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Raleigh, draws on her past to talk about tax relief and fighting unemployment.

The district was created after census figures showed a 21 percent population increase in North Carolina during the 1990s. It stretches from parts of Greensboro and Burlington through four northern border counties and into Raleigh.

Voter registration numbers point to the Democrats.

Polls for both campaigns show Miller with a lead of around 7 percentage points over Grant. Libertarian Alex MacDonald of Greensboro is also on the ballot.

Poll Ping!

Well, kind of, anyway. No specific poll results, but this article does indicate that internal polls for both campaigns show about a 7-point race. That's a bit closer than I would have guessed.

If you want on or off my poll ping list, let me know!

I've been saying for some while that NC-13 could be a big surprise to a lot of people with a GOP upset - not that anyone seems to pay much attention.
