Democratic candidate for Secretary of State doesn't understand the duties of the job he is running for

At the Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks annual luncheon yesterday, Secretary of State candidate Melvin "Butch" Hollowell announced that he was looking forward to assuming the role of Chief Historian if elected Michigan's next Secretary of State.

He will be disappointed to learn that the Department of State no longer oversees the state's history - Governor John Engler established the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries. This department was created by statute over a year ago

"The Secretary of State no longer plays a role in the state's history department, and hasn't for over a year now," said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Rusty Hills.

"I realize given his lack of experience in working with the Secretary of State office, Mr. Hollowell has quite a learning curve to overcome," said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Rusty Hills. "But I would have thought by now that he would have at least learned the constitutional and statutory duties of the office.

"After eight tremendous years of customer service and innovation from Secretary of State Candice Miller, we can ill-afford a replacement that is unprepared and uninformed," Hills added.

Republican candidate for Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land served eight years as Kent County Clerk. "Her record in running elections and providing efficient customer service in the state's fourth largest county make her an outstanding choice to replace Candice Miller," said Hills. "She knows the duties of the Secretary of State, and more importantly, she's prepared to do the job from day one."

"Maybe Mr. Hollowell should call Candice Miller and have her fax him a copy of the job description. If he really knew what the position entailed, he might not even be interested in the job," Hills concluded.

I wouldn't vote for Butch either, but shouldn't a candidate know his or her job backward and forward. Obviously trial lawyer Butch doesn't know it....
