The office of State Superintendent of Schools is statewide, highly visible, and a potential stepping stone to higher office in Georgia.
Plus little-known facts concerning the race between Bob Barr and John Linder in the new 7th Congressional District.
A Clear Choice in the GOP Nomination for State Superintendent of Schools
(Atlanta, August 18) -- With a day to go before election day, Georgia gun owners have a clear choice in the GOP race for State Superintendent of Schools.
State Rep. Mitchell Kaye (R-Marietta), a former House pro-gun leader, is facing State Rep. Kathy Cox (R-Peachtree City), an otherwise undistinguished politician backed by the Atlanta newspapers.
Mitch Kay is a five-term State Representative who has earned himself a name as a strong, outspoken conservative on the Georgia House Education Committee.
What's less well known is that Mitchell Kaye is one of a handful of strong pro-gun Reps. who have consistently supported House Pro-Gun Leader Brian Joyce in working for fewer restrictions on our right to keep and bear arms in Georgia.
Mitch Kaye also stood as a leader in the fight to repeal the so-called "fingerprint" driver's license, which is strongly opposed by a significant minority of the people.
Mitch's opponent is Kathy Cox. In two terms, Ms. Cox has managed to carve out an otherwise undistinguished reputation, gaining notoriety only for pushing a bill that would make it illegal to buy and sell urine.

Barr vs. Linder: What the Atlanta Newspapers Don't Want You to Know
(Atlanta, August 18) -- On Tuesday, August 20, voters in Georgia's newly re-apportioned 7th Congressional District will choose between "NRA Floor Leader" Bob Barr (R-Canton) and closet anti-gunner John Linder (R-Duluth).
It's common for the Democrat-controlled Atlanta newspapers to interfere in Republican politics. In order to preserve at least some shred of credibility, the newspapers usually do their dirty work by omission: withholding vital information from the public.
Sometimes, however, when the stakes are high enough, they will actually risk printing false information, which they'll retract later only if they're caught.
This is the case in the new 7th District race. The newspaper has claimed that Mr. Linder's record is essentially the same as Mr. Barr's, and their differences are differences of style, not substance.
This claim is untrue. There are, in fact, a number of important differences in their voting records, but CSG is interested only in the gun issue.
Mr. Linder has been observed for some years to be a politician who claims he's pro-gun, but often acts differently, particularly in procedural matters where there's no vote of record.
Occasionally, Mr. Linder slips up and shows out as a closet anti-gunner. The most blatant "smoking gun" we know is his vote against the Goode Amendment which would have repealed the total ban on gun ownership in Washington, DC.
On June 18th, 1999, Rep. Linder joined anti-gun Reps. John Lewis (D-Atlanta) and Cynthia McKinney (D-Decatur) and voted with them to kill the Goode Amendment to H. R. 2122.

Mr. Linder was the only Georgia Congressman from a pro-gun district who voted against total repeal of the Washington, DC gun ban.
When it comes to the gun issue, while not perfect, Bob Barr has a decisively better record than John Linder.
Also, Congressman Barr has shown some leadership on the gun issue, serving for years as "NRA Floor Leader" in the U. S. House.
