Hayworth to seek 5th term in House

New redistricting lines reduce district size

Republican J.D. Hayworth has made it official: He is a candidate for a fifth term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Under new boundaries drawn in congressional redistricting, Scottsdale resident Hayworth is running in District 5, a largely urban district only a fraction of the size of the sprawling territory of northern and central Arizona he has represented since 1994.

The new district extends northeast from the Ahwatukee Foothills area of Phoenix to take in parts of Chandler and Mesa and all of Tempe, Scottsdale and Fountain Hills.

Hayworth, 43, has now been a congressman slightly longer than the seven years he previously served as a sports anchor on Phoenix television. Before that, he had been in radio, public relations and insurance.

He is the first Arizonan to serve on the House Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for tax-related legislation. He also serves on the Veterans Affairs Committee.

In filing nominating petitions on Monday, Hayworth said national security and providing prescription drug coverage for Medicare recipients rank highest in importance in his campaign.

Hayworth is among leading conservatives in Congress and is chairman of the Constitutional Caucus and the House Conservative Opportunity Society.

He enters the campaign with more than $600,000 on hand in his re-election treasury.

Hayworth and his wife, Mary, are the parents of three children.

Three Democrats are competing for their party's District 5 nomination in the Sept. 10 primary.

They are financial analyst Craig Columbus and business consultant Larry King, both of Scottsdale, and Chandler resident Ronald E. Maynard.

Cool. Go JD!

I just wish that he and the rest of the AZ Congressional Delegation would out Kolbe for the ultra-RINO he is and help us defeat him in the Primary Elections. I'm going to contact some of them and see if they will help. If you've got contacts with JD, could you test the waters?

Is there any chance he will run for McCain's Senate seat in 2004?

Regarding Kolbe, would his sexual orientation have anything to do with your opinion? His ACU rating cruises along at about 70%. If he were not the incumbent, this is a slightly Dem leaning district. If he were slayed in a primary, the odds are high that the district would go Dem. But of course he is safe incumbent, and thus that certain wing of the party has not challenged him. They devote their energies elsewhere, almost always without success with incumbents, and with marginal success otherwise outside their natural habitat.

Are you saying that conservative voters who are looking for someone with good character, who is morally upright, and who will promote family values should ignore that the candidate is homosexual, lied about it to get elected, and even entered into an arranged, sham marriage in order to cover it up? Are you so enamored with political correctness that you think that it shouldn't even be a consideration?

In all truthfulness, it does negatively effect my opinion but not nearly as much as his bad behavior in office.

His ACU rating cruises along at about 70%.

The ACU is too forgiving. They also only take a sampling of the voting record, they don't look at the whole thing like people in the district do. His 6 votes against banning Partial Birth Abortion pretty much undo any of his supposedly conservative votes on a lot of other issues, in my opinion.

If he were not the incumbent, this is a slightly Dem leaning district. If he were slayed in a primary, the odds are high that the district would go Dem.

You can't say that - the district lines have been redrawn and the new numbers show a Republican lead by 18,000 voters. I keep hearing this "Dem leaning district" crap over and over - is there some sort of Talking Points memo that Kolbe released or something? Sheesh!

Please see this thread for a more in depth discussion on these issues and more. I've provided more numbers there and some of Kolbe's awful voting record on some important issues.

I met Hayworth last year. He spoke at the Livingston County GOP Reagan Day dinner. He'd get my vote.

Well if abortion and sexual orientation are your litmus test issues, I see your point. Bush beat Gore in the district by only 2%, and after an acrimonious primary in which the socially conservative right wing candidate won, this district would go Dem. We probably would vote for different candidates in GOP primaries. That is what makes politics exciting.

As I told you, these are just some examples of the reasons I oppose Kolbe. If you visited the thread I pointed you to, you would see more reasons. Such as his terrible voting record on border/immigration issues. I also oppose his constant appeasement of communist China, an issue upon which he has been one of the loudest voices in Congress. He can't seem to appease China enough.

I've known this guy for years. He's an arrogant, clueless politician who's only concern is to further his political career and get re-elected at the expense of his constituents. He is unresponsive to the desires of his constituents and does not care at all about his district. He talks a good talk while he is here doing Town Halls, but his voting record makes his true nature known. He has also pulled some dirty tricks meant to silence a local conservative which was clearly an abuse of power.

And any numbers you quote on the district are out of date since the district boundaries were redrawn.

And we're not just talking about abortion, we're talking about Partial Birth Abortion - a barbaric act of murder that simply is not debatable. How could anyone vote for a man who has voted against banning that atrocity all 6 times he has had the opportunity? How could anyone call him a Republican - he and the other 15 Republicans that voted against the ban?

My numbers are for the redrawn district actually. Bush carried the old district by 1%. It is now slightly more GOP.

Well I oppose partial birth abortion as well, although it is not a sine qua non issue with me, although I fully understand how it could be with some, and respect that. It is all a judgment call about end games.
