Conservative activist Riley Gaines brushed off President Donald Trump's criticism of her on Monday, saying she does "nothing for the approval of man."
Gaines, a former NCAA swimmer, was one of the many Trump supporters critical of an AI-generated image the president shared on social media on Sunday portraying himself as a Jesus-like figure. Trump has since deleted the post.
"Seriously, I cannot understand why he'd post this. Is he looking for a response? Does he actually think this?" she wrote on X on Monday, commenting on the image.
"Either way, two things are true. 1) a little humility would serve him well; 2) God shall not be mocked," she added.
On Monday, Trump told CBS News that people were confused and had misunderstood the image… "I thought it was me as a doctor, and it had to do with the Red Cross."
He added that Gaines' criticism had nothing to do with his decision, saying: "I didn't listen to Riley Gaines. I'm not a big fan of Riley, actually."
Responding to the criticism, Gaines wrote on X: "I love the President and I'm so grateful he's in the Oval Office. Of course, I'll continue to support him and the America First agenda.
"At the end of the day, I do nothing for the approval of man. Our purpose on this earth is to glorify Him in all we do. The Truth social post missed the mark. It's now deleted. Amazing!"

The AI photo was nothing. His attack on Riley was disgusting. He is still the 6yo on the school playground, sadly.
When it comes to religion, some people can be ‘touchy’.
Trump is blowing up his base. This is not good. Something isn’t right. I don’t care about the original post, that’s not the problem, it’s his responses to the criticism from folks on our side that has me concerned.
Don’t complain, don’t explain, don’t apologize are pretty good default settings.
The exceptions should be rare enough to prove the rule.
Not sure if Gaines qualifies as an “influencer” not that I have any idea what an “influencer” is beyond someone with a “media platform”.
To her credit she said her piece and moved on while keeping her dignity.
Same can NOT be said for others with media platforms.
well, it’s no surprise really. President Trump has never been a conservative and even less a Christian conservative. i don’t think he even likes conservatives, frankly. too morally stiff for him, i guess.
that being said, for this conservative, he’s absolutely the only game available to us outside our leftist, America hating uniparty/deepstate; so may God continue to protect, direct and bless him and his adminstration.

The pope as a man must be available for criticism.
He could be a Pastafarian for all I care. What I do care about is that his recent behavior is going to reduce his effectiveness.

Well said. I hope Trump is a Christian for his own eternal sake. But I dont need him to be one, just need him to continue working for our rights to be one. I think this and the Pope issue were unforced errors. As you said, he’s the only game in town and the good far outweighs this BS. There is nothing on the other side.

I've noticed a pattern with people like her. Despite having been helped with her cause by President Trump, she didn't have the decency to contact the White House first before criticizing him in the media. The man deserved that from her.
