As federal health care subsidies barrel toward expiration, a bipartisan group of 35 U.S. lawmakers is calling on leaders in the House and Senate to hold a vote on extending the benefits before the end of next week.
The group includes Rep. Jeff Hurd, a Grand Junction Republican who has been pushing for a renewal of the subsidies, known as the enhanced premium tax credit. The subsidies, passed by Democrats in Congress during the COVID-19 pandemic, helped lower insurance premiums for plans purchased through Affordable Care Act marketplaces, but are now slated to expire on Dec. 31.
Many Coloradans have begun seeing major increases in their insurance premium for next year as a result. Rural and mountain communities are expected to be hit particularly hard, and some Western Slope residents have reported monthly premium increases as high as 400%. Hurd’s district includes most of western and southern Colorado.

In a statement, Hurd said he is “proud to be a part of this bipartisan group of lawmakers working towards a real solution on healthcare.”
“It does not matter how red or blue your district is — the cost of healthcare is not a partisan issue,” Hurd said.

Rino alert
UGH. RINOS.
No more subsidies!
Too bad they can’t come right out and say they’re somewhat responsible for this healthcare disaster.
Look at his donations and see which insurance companies bought him off.
One RINO make it bipartisan? There is no mention of other RINOs in the writeup.
Hurd is a freshman who represents a slightly “red” district in Colorado, and he has tried to toe the GOP party line as much as possible, but he’s feeling some heat on his left side.
Hurd defeated the biggest-spending Democrat House candidate in the entire U.S. in 2024, winning the open seat which had been vacated by Lauren Boebert.
Hurd is getting it from both sides heading into 2026. A ultra-liberal Wall Street millionaire Democrat (not the same guy Hurd faced in ‘24) is trying to portray himself as a moderate and he will get the Rat nomination without any struggle at all.
Hurd will also have a viable primary opponent in Hope Scheppelman. She is running as a conservative in contrast to Hurd’s squishiness. The GOPe will be solidly behind Hurd with its money and endorsements, like it was in 2024 when they shunned a more conservative candidate.
With everyone focused on places like California and Virginia, Colorado is also a Rat-controlled state where Democrat re-gerrymandering is possible before 2026 though few are talking about it. If that happens, Hurd is almost 100% a goner because he (and his district) is by far the lowest-hanging fruit for Democrats to eliminate.
I just don’t get it. We keep jamming more gallons of insulin into the patient, and his diabetes keeps getting worse...
