In his first eight months in the White House in 2017, Donald Trump held nine rallies — the kind of campaign-style events that had come to define his political brand, drawing thousands of supporters from across the country willing to wait for hours for the chance to hear directly from their president.
This time, Trump has traded rallies in places like Nashville and Louisville for a flurry of official events on the White House grounds. When Trump does venture away from Washington or his golf clubs in Florida and New Jersey, where he also entertains prominent visitors on weekends, it has mostly been to drop in at major sporting events, such as… to a UFC match in Miami.
The White House is attempting to gain support for the president’s controversial tariff plan, and his overall approval rating has dropped slightly amid economic uncertainty — though it remains higher than it was this time eight years ago. But after a frenetic pace of campaign events leading up to his election, traveling to see his base and mobilize his supporters is simply no longer a top priority.
“There’s really no reason to do it,” a senior White House official said of the rallies, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss strategy.
The official said Trump keeps tabs on his base in a number of ways — by staying plugged in on conservative social media and discussing political topics with aides — and he lets them hear from him by taking questions in front of news cameras several days a week. While Trump may resume the large-scale political events closer to next year’s midterm elections, he is focused in the meantime on enacting his aggressive agenda, the official said.
“I really miss those rallies,” said Shah Mehdi, a commercial driver from Wisconsin…

But the president is arguably more divorced than ever from the world outside his DC bubble — from average MAGA voters and the day to day concerns of people in the heartland and the like…This may be impacting his agenda and his approach in more ways than one.
He also can’t rally readily on behalf of GOP candidates in local and midterm elections. That also makes a difference.
Trump has had at least two attempts on his life and Charlie Kirk had one.
There will be a time for more rallies but they need to be indoors and secure.
If the MSM wants Trump to have rallies, there’s a reason.
And not a good one.
If he was hosting rallies, this same mockingbird droppings author would be complaining that he isn’t carrying out Presidential duties.
Really. What a ridiculous thing to focus on and expect.
Unfortunately without Trump out in the public, be is becoming more and more isolated and making more and more stupid decisions IMHO.
The influence of the DC Neocons seems to be growing in his recent actions.
“Trump isn’t holding rallies these days ...”
...and that’s a good thing!
I guess Democrats taking a hit on the govt. shutdown has really mobilized their media.
I guess the 2028 run isn’t on the books anymore. /sarc
He’s holding rallies but they have been overseas and world leaders have basically given him what he wants...
Trump not only understands business. He understands shiw business. Which, unfortunately, is what much of our politics has become. Always keep your audience wanting more.
its not necessary at this point
Mid-terms are a year away.
Its time to govern and play DC politics, 24/7
I think he’s been kind of busy lately…
Well, he IS a bit busy....for one thing.
Does the WaPo have a bucket of “orangemanbad” complaints in their offices and someone pulls out two random issues to complain about each day?
They know attacking his rallies angers him so they are poking the bear. Typical psychopathic manipulation.
least Trump isn’t needing lid days or short days with long weekends off like his predecessor.
No rallies? OMG!!! Another threat to our democracy.
He is older, and he is human.
Yeah, if Trump keeps this up he might not get re-elected in 2028. Good grief, is this the sort of thing the WaPo is reduced to?
