Connect it to a home internet (Or any internet you can access) and you should be able to use it fine. Just when you are not in range of a Source, like driving in a car, you won't be able to. If the phone is new enough, you can load a route via wifi before traveling. Newer phones have a GPS chip built in. It is actually fairly accurate. I repurposed my flakey older Iphone to do this. The phone works great as a golf distancing app
