Although the Inquisition existed in New Spain, I recall reading that they never put to death any “natives” for heresy. The same would have applied even more so in California where the natives were backward compared to those in Mexico.
The mission was established in 1771 but they moved to the present location, several miles away, in 1776. Over the years there was damage because of neglect (after secularization) and earthquakes so I don’t know the actual age of the roof. But it doesn’t date to 1771.
It’s kind of odd that they would mention that...unless they suspect it was a revenge arson?
