Hours before Albuquerque police detained alleged members of an armed civilian group when a protest erupted in gunfire Monday, the mayor of New Mexico's largest city announced that unarmed social workers – not officers – would now respond to certain 911 calls.
The decision came as Black Lives Matter advocates to defund police departments in the wake of the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in police custody after Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes on May 25.
Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller announced that the city would create a “first-of-its-kind” cabinet-level department that would respond to calls on inebriation, homelessness, addiction and mental health.

Oh you are so wrong...Cops are bad ..Social workers have always done the right thing....Especially when they get bogged down with a million cases...They make time for everyone,especially children...No child has ever died under the care of social workers........Do I need a sarcasm tag??????
Maybe I’ll just save them the trip, and deal with the problem myself.
All 911 calls are potentially dangerous. Cops know that.
Sure, it may take a week for them to arrive, but they will come!
This is an idiotic situation. However...sending “armed” social workers would be beyond mere idiocy. Another complicating factor is that most social workers are leftists so they are probably not at work...they are out rioting or “protesting”.
It’s actually half-right. Sending someone along to attempt to de-escalate the situation might work, but I’d send cops with them in case things got dicey.
Nobody will ever know..No newspaper,TV news and very little will show up on internet...Just like the murdered Christians in Middle East,the white genocide in South Africa and Zimbabwe and the black on black killings in Chicago

Crazy people. Social workers already hold the #20 spot for deadliest job in America. Looks like they’ll be moving up in the ranking. Social workers often ask for police to accompany them on “routine” home visits where their clients are hostile, crazy, etc. I can’t imagine they’re going to want to respond to 911 calls on their own.
It does not matter to me who they send.
Social workers as a group routinely identify with the victim. In a normal everyday conflict, there usually is no clear cut victim. These events commonly escalate into violence because both sides feel justified. Social workers will be paralyzed by their built in prejudice, take sides, and become the victim themselves. It is baked in. There is no way this will not end badly.
Many social workers will refuse to do this. They have more sense and more street cred than the idiot politicians
This would make a great SNL skit. I can think of a bunch of scenarios.
Gunfight at a bar. someone calls 911. Social workers show up and try to reason with the fighters. Social workers run for their lives.
Almost all social workers are. And they will be the outlaw’s natural prey.
