Its 10:30 a.m. and Dave Green is home for the weekend tinkering with his car. The former president of the local UAW 1112, who once led workers at the shuttered GM Lordstown plant in Ohio, was forced to relocate to Bedford, Indiana, this past summer where he now works on the companys die-cast production line.
Green, whom President Trump famously bashed on Twitter when General Motors announced it was closing the plant, is a devout Democrat and union man who does not care for the president. Like many of his peers across the Midwest, he is waiting and hoping for one of the Democratic presidential candidates to do something inspiring.
The candidates who have the right message arent on the debate stage, said Green of his former congressman Tim Ryan and Sherrod Brown, the US senator from Ohio who dropped out of the contest before the debates even started. We need candidates to actually step up and do more than lip service, do something to help change some of the laws that are anti-worker, he continued. Because, quite frankly, weve been getting our asses handed to us for 20 years or more. And, if something doesnt change
His voice trails off in frustration.
As social media, a socialist-leaning base and each successive debate molds the Democrats 2020 platform, climate change has emerged as the single most important issue, followed by Medicare for All, more government spending, free college, gun confiscation, reparations for the descendants of slaves, and banning fossil fuels and the jobs they create.

She is indeed a real reporter, and there’s not many of them left at any level of the news media ... and one less since I retired, although I never made it to a major metro daily.
My grandfather was the typical Democrat of his time. WWI vet who collected his 1945 bonus ten years early & bought a house; coal miner, fireman, boiler operator, lodge member, church member, immigrant who assimilated so completely he had no foreign accent, thought America is the greatest country in the world, and so on.
Oh - forgot to mention Grandpa hated FDR with a passion; revisionists on the Bonus March leave out Roosevelt’s vetoing the early payment bill twice before being overridden. He was a bigger enemy to vets than bad old Douglas MacArthur & his tanks.
A friend invited Mom to visit her in Honolulu in June of 1941, her father replied no way you’re going, them damn Japs are going to attack any time now and that rubberlegged SOB in Washington isn’t doing a damn thing about it.
I guess Grandpa wasn’t so typical a Democrat. He refused to join the UMW because all John L. Lewis was doing with union dues was making himself filthy rich.
Speaking of filthy rich, Lizzie Warren is making overtures to “the workers” using a purely Marxist term. Another leftwing multimillionaire hypocrite giving a nod to the peasants.
They are just realizing it now? Slow learners but waking up late is better than not waking up at all.
Democrats abandoned the blue collar voter during the Clinton years, when they purged the party of the moderate and blue dog democrats.
It cost them the election in 2000, but they didn’t see it.
Had Gore simply held WV, FL didn’t matter.. A state that hadn’t voted for a Republican in an open election since 1928!! (yes it had voted for re-election of some GOP folks between then and 2000, but it had NEVER EVER voted for a non incumbent GOP for President since 1928)
That should have been the warning to the Dems they were on the wrong path... but Obama created a one time cover, due to his race, and and anger at the Bush years, and lets not even get into Romney. So they just kept marching away from their blue collar base... and thought it didn’t matter...
Funny thing though, even with all the identity politic nonsense the left uses, their single biggest voting bloc is still non college educated whites..... and those non college educated whites have finally started to figure out the Dems don’t care about them.
I think of the late James Trafficant when I read stories of blue collar Democrats. It wasn’t so long ago they were the backbone of their party, but now with tens of millions of illegals from Central America flooding into the country the RATS can simply ignore their former bread and butter constituency. In the recent past every Democrat politician always had the photo ops with the hard hat on and schmooze with the labor unions. Now it’s much more important to be seen with LGBT and Latino groups more than anyone else. Money and votes plus political power. The only three things that matter to a RAT these days.
“just kept telling them they didnt...”
Just like the RINO’s kept telling us what we wanted to hear come voting time, and when the jerks got in just gave us the finger.
This guy has a point, he’s waiting for a rat to come up with improvements, but they don’t. Rat politics is pure negativism.
Imagine competing car companies advertising like our politicians do:
Ford (Trump) - We’ve got the safest, highest MPG vehicles that are pure comfort and style.
Chevy (Rats) - Our cars just suck, and it’s Fords fault.
Hey, wake up you numpties.
The dems haven’t had any part or piece of your interests in mind for your entire lifetimes.
Quit being idiots.
DOH, they said as much during the last election.
Wake up fool, your freaking Union and the Democrat Fascists party is not your friend.
90% of blue collar workers are NOT in a union.
The GOP love affair with cheap labor, off shoring and free trade proves that blue collar workers have no home there either.
Working class whites were abandoned by the Dems decades ago. And the Repubs didn’t really try picking them up before Trump.
Whoever is the candidate, will get his vote.
It’s a cult, an addiction. It will take something personal and drastic for this democrat to come to his senses.
The GOP fossils still thing all labor is unionized. It’s not, not even close.
Trump is pro worker but the GOP is not. Not at all.
Only 10% of the work force is in a labor union. The GOP needs to go after them. The 90% not in a union hate unions as much a they(GOPers) do.
What is that?
If the “blue collars” had continued on educating themselves, they would know that the ‘rat totalitarians are not they’re friends or looking out for their best interests.
A bit late to the party. They were abandoned many, many decades ago.
