How GOP Insiders View Trump's 'Base-Only' 2020 Strategy
RCP Commentary ^ | 6-28-2019 | Myra Adams

Time magazine’s July 1 issue, with its “respectful” cover photo of Donald Trump looking “presidential” — for which the magazine was "scorned" — features a provocative interview with the headline quote: “My Whole Life Is a Bet.”

Within the interview, one “Trumpian” statement stands out because it defies traditional political logic: When Time asked whether he should reach out to swing voters, he said, “‘I think my base is so strong, I’m not sure that I have to do that.’”

I was intrigued and confounded by the president’s bravado when supposedly he is running for president of the United States, not president of His United Base. In a country so polarized that the middle has virtually disappeared, shouldn’t Trump at least pretend to reach out to swing voters? He could even position that effort as a patriotic move for the well-being of the nation. My strategic advice would be to try a little unification instead of division. But since his “Whole Life Is a Bet,” Trump is betting that his base will carry him to victory and to heck with the rest of America.

Perplexed by this strategy, I reached out to some well-known Republican presidential consultants and gleaned fascinating insights and perspectives....

The last national GOP political consultant who spoke on the record about Trump’s base-only strategy is Rick Tyler, now an MSNBC political analyst … He was communications director for Sen. Ted Cruz's presidential campaign until February 2016 when he was dismissed after a headline-making video controversy regarding Marco Rubio’s campaign. ...

Tyler is critical of Trump’s strategy:

“It was swing voters who made the difference between Trump winning and losing in 2016. Swing voters decided the outcomes in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. ...Trump giving up on the voters who made him president is a strategy for losing.”

The “Democrats off the rails” part is important. I think a lot of folks who swing or lean left will just stay home, thinking “I can’t stand Trump but the economy is okay, and the Dem candidate is a nut... yeah, I think I’ll just stay home, have pizza, and watch and see what happens.”

How, specifically, would he “reach out to swing voters”?

I mean does he lie to them by promising things his base wouldn’t like and then not following through?

Or does he promise them things his base wouldn’t like and then follow through?

It seems to me campaigning on certain ideals together with pointing out ones actions kept from previous campaign is the way to go.

But then again what do I know? I have only been voting for over 50 years.

“The new spin is Hillary is the only candidate Trump could have beaten. The truth is Trump is the only candidate who could have beaten Hillary.”

i think there’s some truth to both, ESPECIALLY the latter, which is a dead certainty

but that was then and this is now, namely, the fool Dems have gone full-metal, hard-core, uber-lefist, barking-mad, which almost by itself guarantees Trump’s re-election ...

Without RINOS the media and Democrats telling lies, the base for Trump would be all of America.

Instead, the ignorant take Trump’s base as appalling thanks to the mockingbird media.

Trump will win in a landslide, there are MANY silent Trump supporters I live in CA. we have a neighborhood app called Next Door started by the local PD, well a couple of times people have posted things that have started an uproar among the residents!!! I was SHOCKED to see how many Trump supporters I have as neighbors’, a lady posted an announcement for a citizen encampment, it was a summer camp for kids to learn how to become better global citizens and how to take care of the planet to prevent the climate crisis coming. WELL I have to tell you they had to pull the announcement because people were just LIVID about this SO CALLED camp being used to indoctrinate kids filling their minds full of propaganda THIS is in CA. AND on the coast of CA., I am telling you ALL that there is MASSIVE voter fraud going on in this state AND there are far more people on the RIGHT out there than we all are lead to believe!! This IS why Trump won in 2016 AND why he WILL WIN by even more in 2020!!! The media and the left are going to be STUNNED in 2020 HOWEVER these people are violent and our large cities are going to be one hot mess!!!

“How, specifically, would he “reach out to swing voters”?”

you do that with ads showing how insane the Dem candidate and Dem party is, and ads showing how well the economy is doing compared to what it was under obama ... we base already know all of that, but ads like those are good reminders to others who don’t necessarily pay as close attention as we do ...

“The media and the left are going to be STUNNED in 2020”

agreed ... especially because the fake polls aren’t gonna show the true support for Trump ...

Trump’s base is the rest of America. It’s the pundit/influencer class of pseudo-moderates Trump isn’t bothering to reach out to - and they are pissed about it.

Trump told one of his rallies that while Bernie was being railroaded, we should stay out of it because Hillary would be easier to beat.

While there are still some Bernie bros out there, a lot of them have seen the light, and last time he looked intense when he spoke. Now, he looks unhinged.

BTW, on the whole "Hillary or Michelle will step in to save the day for the dems," all I can say is "Bold strategy, Cotton." Gonna be tough to herd that many cats after the convention.

What state do you think he can win in 2020 that he lost in 2016. Wasn’t only NH really close?

Two thoughts.

1) they have a point, that there are swing voters or Bernie voters or Hillary haters who won’t vote trump this time around.

2) trump hates losing more than anything in the world so he will do just about anything to win.

I also keep finding stealth trump supporters in LA. One was a rock star, and one was a new age healer, both men, both totally closeted trump supporters.

Is the writer really that big a nitwit to take the statement literally. (Yeah, probably). It’s a bit of braggadocio.

What are "swing" voters?

What are "moderate" voters?

What are "independent" voters?

I'll tell you what they are. They are the fabrication of left-wing consultants and GOP establishment figureheads to force conservatives to water-down their ideology so it becomes no different than the left and the left wins by default thanks to conservative base voters staying home or voting 3rd-party.

If a voter is truly undecided, then that's not Trump's problem. He's giving people what they want and knows where he stands.

If the GOP would have just done what Trump has done, they'd be in complete control of Washington and in over 40 states.
