Would Democrats Really Face A Backlash If They Impeached Trump?
Five Thirty Eight ^ | May 15, 2019 | Perry Bacon Jr.

Some rank-and-file congressional Democrats favor starting impeachment proceedings against President Trump. Even Democrats who don’t favor impeachment, such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have suggested that Trump’s behavior could be impeachment-worthy, pointing to his administration’s refusal to comply with Congress’s requests for documents and testimony from key officials and the Mueller report’s references to potential obstruction of justice by the president. But Pelosi has downplayed the possibility of pursuing impeachment, hinting that such a move would hurt Democrats electorally.

Put simply, the impeachment of Bill Clinton hangs over everything — Republicans impeached Clinton in 1998, and voters rallied to his defense. Pelosi and other senior Democrats probably fear a similar backlash.

But are they right to?

In the short term, yes. Polls show that impeachment proceedings, at least at their start, would probably be opposed by a plurality of the public. The long term is more complicated, however. If House Democrats impeached Trump sometime in 2019 but he remained in office, would the process meaningfully decrease the party’s chances of retaining the House and winning the Senate or presidency in November 2020? That’s not so obvious. (We’re assuming for this article that a House vote to impeach Trump would be followed by an acquittal in the Senate, so the president would not be removed from office.)1

Let’s unpack the electoral politics of impeachment in more detail, with a few precise questions.

Would impeachment hurt congressional Democrats in the near term?

Probably.

Since the release of the (redacted) Mueller report, some news and polling organizations have asked the public questions about impeachment.2

8 minutes in, Laura Ingraham says she’s been told by someone in the White House that the President will release all the docs we’ve been waiting for next week. some confusion over whether they’d be released to AG or to the public:

Did anybody else read the comments to this article? These Dems are insane rabid dogs. I had no idea they were so delusional. They're young children with no sense of political history in Washington. Their vehement hatred of President Trump is beyond understanding.

What makes it so disheartening is that I never even had vile thoughts like theirs for President Obama or Hillary Clinton. I was adamantly against their socialist and anti-American actions and beliefs, but in my mind, reason guided my thoughts and comprehension. These Democrats are terrifyingly deranged.

Thanks 2ndDivisionVet. Does putting all their heads on spikes count as "backlash"?

Clinton was impeached for committing a crime, perjury. He even pleaded guilty to committing perjury. He also lost his law license because of committing perjury. Clinton avoided removal from office because the Democrats and the media focused not on his perjury, but that the perjury was simply the result of his sexual affairs with Monica Lewinsky.

What crime has Trump committed? That he will face serious criminal indictment after he leaves office is a liberal wet dream. Those who claim Trump obstructed justice would have a hard time making a court case particularly when the circumstances of the whole Mueller Russia investigation was shown to be a total fraud.

Hillary destroyed and wiped devices and then openly mocked investigators.

When backups were discovered, James Comeystain suppressed them and said that the 80,000 were all duplicates of the 30,000 they already had.

Their vehement hatred of President Trump is beyond understanding.

Not beyond understanding when you factor in the 24/7/365 smears and character assassination they’ve been exposed to on all platforms for nearly 4 years.

They are inculcated. It is a vindication for the media/social media/academic complex. Their propaganda techniques have worked.

For those aiming at the destabilization of the United States, it must be heartwarming to observe our societal disarray, the creation of warring tribes and the geographical divides that have been created by these techniques.

They play with fire and sow the seeds for the next Pinochet, Franco, Garibaldi, Marcos, or Papadopoulos to come in, after the conflict they cannot win, only to watch themselves rounded up and disappear.

They think they must win their "struggle" but fools and idiots never win.
